12 + 12, 12 x 12’s – “Stick Man” Finished Painting

24 StickMan

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s – #6 by Craig L Haupt

Title-“Stick Man”  Fourth sequenced post.

Posted is the “Stick Man” finished painting.

As I mentioned last week, there were a few nagging questions about a few objects in the painting that needed to be resolved as it neared completion. The first of these, the tightrope. In the worksheet the rope went off the right side of the canvas. I needed the rope somehow to be grounded. Wrestling with a few solutions, I settled on the tie-off to the corner of the canvas.

On the worksheet the hand/arm coming in from the right had an apple in it. This was a weak correlation to the person holding the grapes. I changed the apple to a house. The person holding the building, looking at the hand/arm with a house, I felt had a stronger correlation.

And last, at the bottom right corner, the grassy knoll under the shelf holding the car felt very empty. Here I added a road going over a rise with the back of a truck slowly disappearing.

Next Monday is Labor Day, and since most people will be out and about, I will post an image from the archives and then I will be away from the computer till the end of September. I will post the “Doodle” for image #7 starting Monday October 3rd.

The project will be posted in the following sequence, 1st Monday-the sketch/doodle or related source from whence the painting has originated.

The second Monday-the 12”x12” pencil ‘Worksheet’ showing the intended painting.

The third Monday-a ‘Progress’ post of the painting.

The fourth Monday-the ‘Finished’ painting.

Then repeat.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Stick Man” Progress Painting

23 Stick Man Progress

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s – #6 by Craig L Haupt

Title-“Stick Man”  Third sequenced post.

Posted is the “Stick Man” painting in progress.

As I started to figure out the colors of the figures, the transition of colors from one figure to the next became an important determining factor. It was the color decision for the bottom center figure that set the colors in motion.

As I get ready for additional paint layering to the figures and adding the cast of objects (shown on the previous worksheet post), there are still a few nagging questions. These question entail how certain objects affect the overall balance to the composition. How one object might have a weak correlation to another nearby object and an area in the bottom right corner (the grassy knoll), minus any object on the worksheet, still feels empty.

I’m pondering solutions, of which the resolutions will be shown next Monday in the finished painting.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Stick Man” Worksheet

22 Stick Man Worksheet

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s – #6 by Craig L Haupt

Title-“Stick Man”  Second sequenced post.

Posted is the 12” x 12” pencil Worksheet to be used for the ‘Stick Man” painting.

I decided to expand on the two figures in the chosen ‘doodle’ and with it came the thought process of the narrative. Unlike “The Candy Store” and others, which have a strong central narrative, there is a menagerie of small semi-related narratives sprinkled around to the various characters.

The second ’doodle’ I incorporated as a mask, hanging from the hand of one of the figures in the lower left area.

Lastly, the hand-held ’toy’ in the upper left corner is the “Stick Man”. Contemplating this figures hand, begging to hold something, a ’doodle’ which I can’t seem to locate in any of my sketchbooks came into my head. I don’t know if it’s a real, I-can’t-find-it ‘doodle’ from the sketchbooks, or imagined, but he insisted on being included, enough that I named the painting after him.

There still a few questions about a few of the objects in the design but they, I hope, will be resolved during the painting process.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Stickman”-The Doodle

21 Stick Man Doodle

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s #6 by Craig L Haupt

Title-“Stick Man”  First sequenced post.

Posted is ‘The Doodle’, from Sketch Book Six, February 2013. This selection is from the +12 portion of the project-Doodles selected by friends/artists. This one was selected by Pat. She chose the circled ‘doodle’ number One-showing two figures. In contemplating what design would develop from these ‘two guys’ the most important question was: Do I use just these two figures or can I add additional figures to them. While looking at these characters, I happened to notice the ‘doodle’ in circle number Two. I had always had an interest in this face but felt it was best suited for a “Thumbnail Sketch” drawing. So another question was, could I somehow work the ‘face’ into this design. .

How I resolved combining the two is on next Monday’s ‘Worksheet’ post as well as why this painting is named “Stickman”.

The project will be posted in the following sequence, 1st Monday-the sketch/doodle or related source from whence the painting has originated.

The second Monday-the 12”x12” pencil worksheet showing the intended painting.

The third Monday-a progress post of the painting.

The fourth Monday-the finished painting.

Then repeat.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“The Candy Store” Finished Painting

20 The Candy Store

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt #5

Title-“The Candy Store”  Fourth sequenced post.

Posted is “The Candy Store” finished painting. After several layers of paint and glazing additional colors to different areas I was able to sign my name to a finished painting.

The question throughout this painting was the object on the sidewalk that the ‘red’ character, on the right, would be concentrating on. Back on the worksheet there was a ’cat’ poking his/her head out from behind the large character to the left. I decided to use the ’cat’ as the object of interest. I didn’t want it to look like a cartoon cat but I am not a realistic painter to say the least. After looking at lots and lots of images of cats, I held my breath and dove in to paint it as a one shot deal. In the context of the painting, I’m satisfied, hope it looks all right to you, the viewer.

Next week the start of Painting #6

The project will be posted in the following sequence, 1st Monday-the sketch/doodle or related source from whence the painting has originated.

The second Monday-the 12”x12” pencil worksheet showing the intended painting.

The third Monday-a progress post of the painting.

The fourth Monday-the finished painting.

Then repeat.
