Title-“Back to Back” Fourth sequenced post.

Posted is the 12” x 12” ‘Back to Back” Finished painting.

 

Referring to last weeks Post about possible additions and changes, a diffused tree-line background was added and the sky color changed.

The other area of concern was trying to enhance the notion that these two individuals are sitting back to back rather than against the tree by adding stronger shadows along with the placement of various objects. This will be one of those things where the viewer has to make up their own mind as to how the figures are seen in relationship to the tree.

Title-“Back to Back” Third sequenced post.

Posted is the 12” x 12” Progress painting for the ‘Back to Back” painting.

 

As I begin the underpainting, an area I am having an issue with is the color of my ‘sky’ and a possible background. Do I add some type of additional information beyond the fence. A hedge or tree line perhaps and is this background in focus or defused.

The other area of concern is added shadows and object placement to try and enhance the notion that these two individuals are sitting back to back rather than against the tree.

Solutions have been considered and the results will be shown on next Monday’s Final Painting Post.

Posted is the 12” x 12” pencil Worksheet to be used for the ‘Back to Back” painting.
Referring back to the first sequenced ‘Doodle’ post of this “Back to Back” painting, an area of contention was the ‘space’ in the Doodle between the two figures. I opted to make the ‘space’ a tree. This posed another question, are they resting against the tree?, as they would have if I used a hedge or wall. I decided, from my own slightly twisted sense of logic to have them sitting ‘back to back’. This puts them behind the tree. The items I placed in the painting, i.e. the small table and the watering-can behind the tree roots, I hope, helps to imply that sense of depth.

Not sure how it will work in the completion of the painting.

In painting, a weak spot is my lack of ability to paint ’leaves’ on trees. To compensate, I have had to create my own tree foliage. A solution for this tree is shown in this worksheet.

Title-“Back to Back”  First sequenced Post.

 

Ah, the start of a New Year and with it the start of the next Painting in the 12 + 12 Art Project. When looking at the two figures sitting back to back in this circled ‘Doodle’ from 2012, I face certain questions. As the creative part begins for the worksheet and subsequent transfer to canvas, I have the artistic freedom to change the ‘Doodle’ to whatever I want to.  Yet there is an internal switch that wants to maintain as much of the integrity (a word often used in these First sequenced Posts) of the ’Doodle’ as possible. In this case, my area of contention is the separation of space between the two figures marked by the Red Arrow. If I choose to include it, then the question becomes, what alteration is made to the space to create an object that they are leaning against, a fence?, wall?, hedge?, etc.

Then, of course, there is the question of a narrative.

Next weeks ‘Worksheet’ will show decisions and solutions.
