12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Sorry” Worksheet

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt #3

Title-“Sorry”  Second sequenced post.

Posted is the 12” x 12” pencil Worksheet to be used for the ‘Sorry” painting.

The ‘doodle’ that Karen picked, took many variations and rough drafts before I found a design that worked, while still maintaining the integrity of the original ‘doodle’. To be noted, this was the challenge of allowing others to select a ‘doodle’ from my sketchbooks and so far, from the friends that have selected, the development process has certainly been interesting.

Ready for the transfer to canvas, color choices and additional modifications.

The project will be posted in the following sequence, 1st Monday-the sketch/doodle or related source from whence the painting has originated.

The second Monday-the 12”x12” pencil ‘Worksheet’ showing the intended painting.

The third Monday-a ‘Progress’ post of the painting.

The fourth Monday-the ‘Finished’ painting.

Then repeat.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Sorry”-The Doodle

13 Sorry-Doodle

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt #4

Title-“Sorry”  First sequenced post.

Posted is ‘The Doodle’, from Sketch Book One, December 2006. This selection is from the +12 portion of the project-Doodles selected by friends. This one was selected by Karen. She selected the ‘doodle’ number One for the three spheres and the shapes surrounding the top area of the spheres. Yet Karen also liked the long downward ‘leg’ shapes in the circled ‘Doodle’ number Two. I decided to incorporate both into the final painting.

How I resolved combining the two is on next Monday’s ‘Worksheet’ post.

A NOTE: The 12 people I selected for the +12 portion of this project were for several reasons, two are my sons, some, very close friends I have known for years, some, artists I have connected with over the years. Other variables such as time and place played a part with people I knew. There were only 12 selections I could make and there were many people I would like to have included in this project and my hope is that you don’t feel slighted in any way.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-Memorial Day Intermission Post

56

Project: Intermission Post for Memorial Holiday Observance.

Title-“Brizard” by Craig L Haupt

While I have no artwork related to this Holiday Observance, I post a very simple color pencil and watercolor image.

These weekly Posts are also seen by followers from outside the borders of the United States and while today is our national holiday here in the United States for those fallen in past and present wars, I wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all those, both here and around the world, who have given their lives in the struggle against oppression and tyranny.

I will continue the 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s Art Project Monday, June 6.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Dessert” Finished

12 Dessert

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt #3

Title-“Dessert”  Fourth sequenced post.

Posted is the “Dessert” Finished painting.

When reviewing/critiquing my paintings with a few friends/artists, I incur a certain degree of lighthearted ribbing when I mull over minor elements for their logical implications. In this case-the ‘screw/bolts’ in the bracket for the head and shoulder/hand/jaw joints – do I make them all with cross marks in the circles (as drawn on the worksheet) for the pivot action or solid color. After weeks and weeks of mental anguish, I opted for the solid, since a ‘cross marking’ would read as a tightened ‘Phillips head’ screw whereas the solid would denote a bolt/dowel to suggest the potential for movement. My, my, my, the decisions artists are faced with!

The project will be posted in the following sequence, 1st Monday-the sketch/doodle or related source from whence the painting has originated.

The second Monday-the 12”x12” pencil worksheet showing the intended painting.

The third Monday-a progress post of the painting.

The fourth Monday-the finished painting.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Dessert” Progress Painting

11 DSC_0376

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt #3

Title-“Dessert”  Third sequenced post.

Posted is the “Dessert” painting in progress. For the ‘madam’ and ’waiter’ figures as well as the wood ‘wainscot’ I have laid in the undercoats of paint. Beyond that, my emphasis has been on the ’wallpaper’ build-up of colors. My intent is to keep the ‘wallpaper’ colors soft or muted so that a sense of depth is achieved by the contrast of the brighter colors on the ‘figures’ and ‘still to be painted desserts’.

I guess once the finished painting is posted next Monday, it will be up to the viewer to decide if I succeeded.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Dessert” Worksheet

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt #3

Title-“Dessert”  Second sequenced post.

Posted is the 12” x 12” pencil Worksheet to be used for the ‘Dessert’ painting.

Once I had figured out a functional bracket for the heads to pivot, the other parts making up the neck, arms, and hands started to fall into place. After generating a solid idea on the ‘worksheet’ for a painting, I am able to benefit from sharing the drawing with a few friends and fellow artists, and in turn ponder suggestions of a few technical design details.

Now on to the transfer to canvas, color choices and additional modifications.

The project will be posted in the following sequence, 1st Monday-the sketch/doodle or related source from whence the painting has originated.

The second Monday-the 12”x12” pencil ‘Worksheet’ showing the intended painting.

The third Monday-a ‘Progress’ post of the painting.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Dessert”, the ‘doodle’

9 Dessert Sketch

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt #3

Title-“Dessert”  First sequenced post.

Posted is ‘The Doodle’, from December 2012. This circled ‘Doodle’ is the end result from the three similar ones to the right. As interested as I was in developing a painting from this ‘doodle’, recurring glances over the years always produced a stumbling block as to how I wanted to make the heads work/pivot on the extension coming up from the neck. Including this ‘doodle’ as part of this project forced me to resolve this issue.

The solution, of course, is on next weeks worksheet post.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“The Wedding”, Finished

8 The Wedding

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt

Title-“The Wedding”  Fourth sequenced post.

Posted is “The Wedding” completed painting.

In the last post, I mentioned the several changes to the size of the tiles in the background before I could begin applying colors to the said tiles. Given the painting aspect, the tiles again proved to generate a great deal of attention.

Trying to achieve a specific color combination I had watercolored on a worksheet portion of the tiles 20 years ago, it was difficult to match the soft tones of the watercolors with the colors generated by the oils. After several attempts and a few suggestions from an Art friend, Karen, I finally was able to manage, albeit a stronger appearance, the same flavor/integrity of my earlier watercolor worksheets.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“The Wedding” Progress Painting

7 The Wedding

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt

Title-“The Wedding”  Third sequenced post.

Posted is “The Wedding” painting in progress. This painting relies heavily on my past drafting background. As the painting is laid out and initial colors applied there is also a constant reworking on the pencil worksheet to reconfigure placement and size proportions while transferring the image to the painting.  The size of the wall tiles alone were erased and resized four times (sometimes by just a 32nd of an inch). In a made-up world it is still important to strike a balance within the fantasy with a logical sense of reality.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“The Wedding”, Worksheet

6 DSC_0353

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt

Title-“The Wedding”  Second sequenced post.

Posted is the 12” x 12” pencil worksheet to be used for the “The Wedding” painting. The previous worksheet attempts, over the years prior to this project, were all consistently toying with a horizontal rectangle layout. To convert the design to a 12” x 12” square format was a little bit of a challenge but I am fairly pleased with the adjustments. The next step is to transfer the design to a gesso prepped board.
