12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Stickman”-The Doodle

21 Stick Man Doodle

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s #6 by Craig L Haupt

Title-“Stick Man”  First sequenced post.

Posted is ‘The Doodle’, from Sketch Book Six, February 2013. This selection is from the +12 portion of the project-Doodles selected by friends/artists. This one was selected by Pat. She chose the circled ‘doodle’ number One-showing two figures. In contemplating what design would develop from these ‘two guys’ the most important question was: Do I use just these two figures or can I add additional figures to them. While looking at these characters, I happened to notice the ‘doodle’ in circle number Two. I had always had an interest in this face but felt it was best suited for a “Thumbnail Sketch” drawing. So another question was, could I somehow work the ‘face’ into this design. .

How I resolved combining the two is on next Monday’s ‘Worksheet’ post as well as why this painting is named “Stickman”.

The project will be posted in the following sequence, 1st Monday-the sketch/doodle or related source from whence the painting has originated.

The second Monday-the 12”x12” pencil worksheet showing the intended painting.

The third Monday-a progress post of the painting.

The fourth Monday-the finished painting.

Then repeat.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“The Candy Store”-The Doodle

Posted is ‘The Doodle’, from Sketch Book Two, March 2008. The grouping of shapes, Circle number 1, was the main interest for developing a painting. As you can see by the date of conception, it has taken this 12 + 12 project to spur me to work something out. The shape to the right, in Circle number 1, representing a wallet, began the initial narrative but would change as the painting developed. The shape in circle number 2 reminded me of a lamppost with little light rays shining down and would serve to further the narrative. The only problem was, as much as I liked the lamppost shape, it was too close to the other shapes, so I changed to a more traditional lamppost as you will see in the Worksheet Post next week.  .

The project will be posted in the following sequence, 1st Monday-the sketch/doodle or related source from whence the painting has originated.

The second Monday-the 12”x12” pencil ‘Worksheet’ showing the intended painting.

The third Monday-a ‘Progress’ post of the painting.

The fourth Monday-the ‘Finished’ painting.

Then repeat.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Sorry”-The Doodle

13 Sorry-Doodle

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt #4

Title-“Sorry”  First sequenced post.

Posted is ‘The Doodle’, from Sketch Book One, December 2006. This selection is from the +12 portion of the project-Doodles selected by friends. This one was selected by Karen. She selected the ‘doodle’ number One for the three spheres and the shapes surrounding the top area of the spheres. Yet Karen also liked the long downward ‘leg’ shapes in the circled ‘Doodle’ number Two. I decided to incorporate both into the final painting.

How I resolved combining the two is on next Monday’s ‘Worksheet’ post.

A NOTE: The 12 people I selected for the +12 portion of this project were for several reasons, two are my sons, some, very close friends I have known for years, some, artists I have connected with over the years. Other variables such as time and place played a part with people I knew. There were only 12 selections I could make and there were many people I would like to have included in this project and my hope is that you don’t feel slighted in any way.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Dessert”, the ‘doodle’

9 Dessert Sketch

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt #3

Title-“Dessert”  First sequenced post.

Posted is ‘The Doodle’, from December 2012. This circled ‘Doodle’ is the end result from the three similar ones to the right. As interested as I was in developing a painting from this ‘doodle’, recurring glances over the years always produced a stumbling block as to how I wanted to make the heads work/pivot on the extension coming up from the neck. Including this ‘doodle’ as part of this project forced me to resolve this issue.

The solution, of course, is on next weeks worksheet post.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“The Wedding”, the ‘doodle’

DSC_0027

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s by Craig L Haupt

Title-“The Wedding”  First sequenced post.

Posted is ‘The Doodle’-from 25 years ago on loose sheets of paper. The images to be used for “The Wedding” painting are circled in Red. Circled with the ‘number 1’ is the first ‘doodle’ and then weeks later I reworked the ‘doodle’ (number 2 and 3) on another sheet of paper.

I have, over the past 25 years, tried several worksheets on several occasions to find a satisfactory final design, always close but never what I really wanted. For this project, I went back to these initial ‘doodles’ and the trial & error sketches/worksheets for another attempt.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s

Boots Sketch

Project Title:  12 + 12, 12 x 12’s

Title: “Boots”

Posted is ‘The Doodle’-from 6-20-07, Sketch Book #2, the image to be used for the “Boots” painting is circled in Red.

This being the start of a new project, a short, bare bones, introduction is in order.

First, the title of this project is 12 +12, 12 x 12’s

What the title refers to:

12 + 12, the first 12 refers to 12 paintings I will complete that are selected by yours truly from ‘doodles’ in my sketch books and other related sources.

The second 12 refers to 12 paintings I will complete, using ‘doodles’ selected from my sketch

books by 12 different individuals (friends and or fellow artists).

12 x 12’s refers to the size of the 24 paintings, 12 inches by 12 inches.

Each succeeding weekly posting will include additional information regarding the project and the posted image.

“The Thumbnail Sketches” Number One

Thumbnail 1

“The Thumbnail Sketches”

Number One

Way, way, back when, I had a small simple sketch (doodle) of a face that I liked. Every time I reviewed my earlier sketch’s, I saw this “face” and as much as I liked it, I couldn’t seem to develop it into a finished drawing.

Over time, I also noticed that I started to accumulate other small subject’s in the sketchbooks that never found a home as a finished drawing.

During my tenure as an art teacher, I created a ditto, called a “Thumbnail Sketch Sheet” (with a drawing of a thumb to one side of the title and a nail to the other side). Beneath were four outlined squares for my students to create four different ideas for the current art lesson. One of which would be used for their final composition. The other three were tucked away in their file folder, also never to find a home.

After years of an ‘on again/off again’ mission to find a home for these doodles, there came an evening, four years ago, when I remembered the Thumbnail sketch sheet and wa-la, an idea, I traced my thumb for a pattern and found a home for my “misfit” doodles.

The outlined box surrounding the thumb is 2 1/4” (56mm) square. The thumb outline is enlarged from my original thumb size to accommodate a small drawing, but it still only measures 2” (51mm) from the bottom border to the tip of the thumb.

While these postings of the “Thumbnail Sketches” will not be in any chronological order, this first post is that initial “face” sketch that started me on this road.
