12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-‘The Connection’, The Finished Painting #21

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s  #21 of 24

Title-’The Connection’

Third sequenced post, ‘The Finished Painting’

Once a design is worked out, color choices come to the forefront. The Color choice that set the tone for the rest of this painting was the background and it was of all things, the tree that propelled that choice. Wanting to Highlight the leaves warranted a darker twilight mood. All the rest of the colors were determined after that. This is the end result.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-‘The Connection’, The Worksheet #21

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s  #21 of 24

Title-’The Connection’

Second sequenced post, ‘The Worksheet’

I mentioned in last weeks ‘Doodle’ posting that there was a particular design issue confronting me. On ‘doodle’ #1, there were seven receding layers (shapes) that I wanted rework to get just three layers. Shown to the left on this worksheet is that solution. Three layers but I managed to give the appearance of more layers by connecting some of the shapes rather than them all overlapping each other.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-‘The Connection’, The Doodle #21

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s  #21 of 24

Title-’The Connection’

First sequenced post, ‘The Doodle’.

From the + 12 portion of this project, the ‘Doodles’ for this painting were selected from my sketchbooks by a fellow Art craftsman and good friend, Mac.

Of the three Mac selected, I chose Doodle #1. Two concerns cropped up, one was the receding of multiple layers. Somehow I needed to rework the seven layers to get it to about 3 or 4 receding shapes but still maintain the integrity of the selected ‘Doodle’. Two, also, as in the previous #20 Doodle posting, I realized that I needed an additional selection to make it fit the 12 x 12 inch format. Neither of Mac’s other two choices seemed to work. With that I perused through the Sketchbooks and found Doodle #2.

The results to be seen in the Worksheet.

Title-’A Leap of Faith’

Second sequenced post, ‘The Worksheet’.

Lots of erasing, deleting and replacing a ‘doodle’, and more erasing, and even a little more erasing, to finally get an image on the worksheet I would be satisfied with. Now for transferring the line work onto the Gesso prepped board and making color choices.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-‘A Leap of Faith’, The Doodle #20

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s  #20

Title-’A Leap of Faith’

First sequenced post, ‘The Doodle’.

From the + 12 portion of this project, these ‘Doodles’ were selected by a fellow artist and good friend, Susan.

A selection of twists and turns. I chose Doodle #1 and realized that I needed an additional selection to make it fit the 12 x 12 inch format. I choose Doodle #2 and rotated it 90 degrees so the side labeled ‘b1’ was positioned to the bottom of the page along with a few alterations. After many attempts to make it work, I dropped Doodle #1, rotated #2 another 90 degrees, so ‘b2’ was now (with additional alteration) towards the bottom of the page. I then added Doodle #3 to the right side of it.

Head spinning yet??

The results to be seen in the Worksheet.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-‘Contemplating Flight’, The Finished Painting #19

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s  #19

Title-’Contemplating Flight’

Third sequenced post, ‘The Finished Painting’.

As mentioned in the ‘Worksheet’ text last Monday, there was a fair amount of work to creating the layout. The painting posed similar issues, particularly the expanding shapes to the right side. The first attempt was not pleasing and was repainted, the posted worksheet reflected that second design attempt. Still not satisfied, several sections (closer to the upper and lower box) were repainted twice more till I found a configuration/placement I could live with. This painting also became a transitional piece in this project that effected the next four 12 + 12 paintings. More on that next Monday.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-‘Contemplating Flight’, The Worksheet #19

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s  #19

Title-’Contemplating Flight’

Second sequenced post, ‘The Worksheet’.

Besides the first attempt to work a complete painting with just the Birds on the leaves, I made several succeeding attempts combining the two selected ’Doodles’ from Deborah. I opted for developing this ’Worksheet’ layout. A very different layout configuration than I have done before, but I had to take in consideration that this was part of the creative equation of this project anyhow.  We’ll see how this works as a painting.

For those new viewers to this 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s project, a short synopsis. 24 paintings total, all 12” x 12”s. Twelve of the 24 paintings are developed from ’Doodles’ selected by yours truly from my sketchbooks. The +12 portion of the project, is that I handed out my sketchbooks to 12 friends/artists I choose and they in turn selected a few ’Doodles’ that I had to develop a finished painting from.

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s  #19

Title-’Contemplating Flight’

First sequenced post, ‘The Doodle’.

So, here we go, posting the last six paintings in the 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s Project.

From the + 12 portion of this project, these ‘Doodles’ were selected by a good friend, Deborah. Doodle No. 1 posed a particular problem in trying to develop it as a main subject in a 12 x 12 inch painting. It wasn’t working. I then decided to include ’doodle no. 2’ (another selection by Deborah) into the equation, also rotating it 90 degrees to use it vertically rather than horizontally. The ‘birds’ now became more of a supporting role to the overall design as to be seen in the Worksheet.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-‘Pondering’, The Finished Painting #18

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s  #18

Title-’Pondering’

Third sequenced post, ‘The Finished Painting’.

As I mentioned in the ‘Worksheet’ post, there was a change made to the leaf that prompted the ‘Pondering’ title. In the painting, I switched the leaf from curling/pointing away (depicted in the worksheet) to having it point inward, which is the proper direction of the ‘fingers’ if resting the chin on a hand. I know, picky, picky, but really, a sense of logic must prevail. Lol.

Next Monday, the start of the next Painting in the ‘12 + 12 Project’.
