As this post shows the preliminary stages for the ‘Hands’ painting, several issues are developing.

Whereas color choices for patterns used from the ‘school visual’ are already established, color decisions need to made for the newer chosen patterns.

As patterns are added to the base colors of the fingers and palms/back of hands, I also need to address ‘form’. An example of this can be seen on the thumb of the bottom right hand. Once a light source was established, I gradually darkened the blue and orange shapes to one side to give the thumb that sense of roundness.

The background color on the ‘school visual’ was the white of the paper and this worked because of the hand and patterns being outlined with black marker. For the painting, there are no outlines and a background color, I deem, is warranted to heighten the separation from the pattern design. As of this post I have a light color background but it doesn’t project the initial hand colors with any strength.

Next weeks ‘Final Painting’ Post with show my final choices for the remaining patterns, pattern colors, and background color. And yes, a marble still has to be added!

For the projected painting I decided on four traced hands (my hands, actual size). For the patterns, as I mentioned in last weeks post, I included several from the School Visual.

The worksheet shows some of the newer patterns added as well as some patterns (fingers that have very light markings) that I am still contemplating.

Also as mentioned last week, there is no narrative or theme that guided my choices of patterns and I also refrained from considering balancing the color scheme from hand to hand which might also have swayed the choices of patterns. In other words, except for the symmetry of the hand layout, I chose to be completely random in my pattern choices.

Not sure how this will work out.

When I started this  12 + 12 Project, March 7th, the synopsis accompanying that first post, stated that for the 12 paintings in this project that I would select, they would be selected “from ‘doodles’ in my sketchbooks and other related sources”.

Well, this is one from ‘other related sources’.

I taught art at the elementary/middle school level for five years and one of the art lessons I used pertained to patterns, lots of patterns. The lesson called for students outlining their hand three times with each traced hand touching another and then adding patterns using Color Markers to create a design.

This posted image is the art visual I created (in 2002) and used as an example for the participating classes.

I have always wanted to do a finished drawing incorporating the hands/pattern format.

I have several worksheets from years past of different attempts and combinations of four, six, and even eight hands, but was never able to work out a finished drawing.

This project gave me an opportunity to try again. Next weeks post will show my selected layout and examples of various patterns I hope to use.

There are at least 11 patterns on this visual that I had always planned to use in a future finished drawing.

A final note, paintings completed so far for this project have incorporated various narratives, this painting is void of any narrative, save a minor one to accommodate a title.

Posted is the “Please, Fetch!!” finished painting.

As noted in last weeks post, there was an additional element to solve a negative space issue between the lamppost and extending to the gentleman throwing the ball. A diffused/hazy sun was added. With this addition I had to work with a light source that back-lit the objects rather than my usual light source of coming over my shoulder from the right.

With this being the first time using a back-lit light source, I am satisfied with the results. Hence, a finished painting!

Posted is the “Please, Fetch” painting in progress. The colors chosen for the lower ‘hill’ potion of each Pedestal were a good start but as noted in the “Please, Fetch” worksheet post, certain changes need to be made to create what’s called ‘atmospheric perspective’. Of course, reducing the size of the pedestals, as ‘linear perspective’, is used to create depth but since the Pedestals sit far enough back from one another, there are no shadows from one pedestal to the next to heighten that sense of depth. Thus, adding ‘atmospheric perspective’ to further strengthen  depth is achieved by having the Pedestals recede in intensity of color as well as size. This is similar to the same effect we see in the sky, the sky closest to us overhead is a darker blue than the sky furthest away at the horizon line which is lighter in color.

Shown on the worksheet, but still to be added in the painting, is a lamppost sitting on the second pedestal from the right. A problem presented itself, in that the area to the left of this lamppost and extending to the gentleman throwing the ball was too great a negative space. With some discussions with a friend, Karen, she made a suggestion. With this suggestion, it solved the negative space issue but it created a light source/direction issue I was unfamiliar with.

Next Monday’s post of the finished painting will show the applied suggestion and how the light and depth issues were resolved.

Posted is the 12” x 12” pencil Worksheet to be used for the ‘Please Fetch!!” painting.

As a narrative developed for this painting, first order of business was deciding on the objects to be placed on the pedestals/hills in relationship to the ‘dog’. The three, cat, fire-hydrant, and grass/flowers in the ‘doodle’ would be included and just needed a couple more. The additional ones chosen are shown on the worksheet.

One of the obvious differences from the previous 12 + 12 worksheets is the notes, lots of notes, about color choices. The bulk of these notes occurred after the painting was started and decisions had to be made on color combinations to separate foreground pedestals from those receding pedestals to create a sense of depth.

On the progress painting post next Monday, this color selection can be best clarified once you can see the first colors applied.

Posted is ‘The Doodle’, from April 2013. As with several other ‘Doodles’ selected for this project, they are ones I have repeatedly glanced at over the years to see if I could develop them into a finished work of art.

Circle #1 is the ‘doodle’ that began the thought process for this painting. To this day, I am still perplexed as to what I was trying to do with the ’tail’ of the dog. Besides the ‘tail’ I was as least interested in the shapes enough that I extended this ‘doodle’ in Circle #2.

Circle #2- As much as I wanted to develop this on a worksheet I was put on hold by my uncertainty of placement of certain pedestals as well as a ‘narrative’.

Adding “Please Fetch!!” to this project spurred me to create a solution, to be shown on next Monday’s ‘Worksheet’ post.

Regarding the color and detail issues expressed in last weeks post, the color of the ‘Birds’ has been changed and for the ’Sail’ I added a stepped reduced layering of the sail shape.

It’s funny how little things can become a major decision. Left side, Center, is a small ‘dark green triangle’ atop the last ‘green’ receding layer. Since this painting is a (not sure of the proper term) geometric abstraction, the ’green color’ in this receding shape represented a hill/land whereas the layers progressing outward from this shape represented water (hence the wave like lines).

To further the impression of land I wanted to add a tree and the completion of this painting came down to this one item. Adding a standard tree shape of trunk and leaves just didn’t fit the overall scheme but the Pine tree shape as a ‘Triangle’ seemed to meld with the use of the other geometric shapes in the composition.

Posted is the “Taking Flight” painting in progress.

Applying the first coats, or under-layers, is akin to the worksheet in many ways. As the worksheet progresses with numerous alterations (some changes continuing even as the painting is in progress), the changes to colors in the painting take much the same path. In this painting, the ‘Birds’ are red with green wings and, as much as I thought these colors would work, they seem to remind me more of Holly leaves and berries than shapes representing birds.

To the right of these ‘Birds’, the ‘Sail’, suggesting a sailboat, worked during this phase of the painting but as second and third coats of final colors were applied and modifications to other shapes took place the ‘sail’ became a heavy blank white area and I needed to go back to the worksheet to add and work out additional details that would strengthen the ‘sail’ and compliment the other shapes in the painting.

The finished painting post next Monday will reflect those changes.

Posted is the 12” x 12” pencil Worksheet to be used for the ‘Taking Flight” painting.

Referring back to the selected “Doodles” (10-03-16 post) the process became how to meld the three of them together, to both create balance and make any adjustments to the shapes if a narrative began to unfold. The narrative, if any, can be a delicate process in itself depending on the abstractness of the image. I develop my own interpretation as the worksheet and painting continues to grow but I don’t want to muddy the reactions and interpretations of the viewer by some detailed explanation. It’s a treat to hear some of the thoughts others attach to a painting.

Next is the choice of colors and shading to create the layered perspectives
