The ‘Eleven’ Series #5

The ‘Eleven’ Series

#5- ‘The Little House’-Oil on Canvas, 8” x 10” Craig L Haupt

As with the previous post of ‘Red Sphere’ this painting is less about narrative and more about color. In particular, the transition of color, starting with the light blue at the ‘house’ and spiraling its way inward to the ‘faces’.

I will be participating in an upcoming Group Exhibit at Y:Art Gallery to show these 11 paintings.

A little ways off, I will still include the Exhibition dates and related information with each Monday Art posting and will Share their FB Event posting as it becomes available.

The “Eleven” Series-#4

The “Eleven” Series

#4-“Red Sphere”-Oil on Canvas, 8” x 10” Craig L Haupt

From a very simple ‘doodle’ in my sketchbook I choose to maintain that simplicity in the line work and rely more on color to strengthen the final image.

A touch more abstract then I am used to doing and also void of any narrative.

I will be participating in an upcoming Group Exhibit at Y:Art Gallery to show these 11 paintings.

The Eleven Series

“Reaching”-Oil on Canvas, 8” x 10” Craig L Haupt

On day Two of my “break” from painting (March 29th), I happened to see a relativity simple Doodle in my Sketch book. I looked over and saw a small 8” x 10” canvas. Suddenly the ‘break’ was over and I started on this several-week whirlwind of eleven 8” x 10” paintings. They are simple in design, quick in execution, some with a looser painting style than others, and most, are void of any narrative other than what an applied title might miserly suggest. They became an enjoyable exercise that set the tone for a few paintings in the second part of the  upcoming 12 + 12 project.

This is the first of the eleven, Titled “Reaching”, and these will be posted each Monday in the order that they were painted.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s – “Taking Flight” Finished Painting

28-takingflight

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s – #7 by Craig L Haupt

Title-“Taking Flight”  Fourth sequenced post.

Posted is the “Taking Flight” Finished painting.

Regarding the color and detail issues expressed in last weeks post, the color of the ‘Birds’ has been changed and for the ’Sail’ I added a stepped reduced layering of the sail shape.

It’s funny how little things can become a major decision. Left side, Center, is a small ‘dark green triangle’ atop the last ‘green’ receding layer. Since this painting is a (not sure of the proper term) geometric abstraction, the ’green color’ in this receding shape represented a hill/land whereas the layers progressing outward from this shape represented water (hence the wave like lines).

To further the impression of land I wanted to add a tree and the completion of this painting came down to this one item. Adding a standard tree shape of trunk and leaves just didn’t fit the overall scheme but the Pine tree shape as a ‘Triangle’ seemed to meld with the use of the other geometric shapes in the composition.

Finished!

The project will be posted in the following sequence, 1st Monday-the sketch/doodle or related source from whence the painting has originated.

The second Monday-the 12”x12” pencil ‘Worksheet’ showing the intended painting.

The third Monday-a ‘Progress’ post of the painting.

The fourth Monday-the ‘Finished’ painting.

Then repeat.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Taking Flight” Progress painting

27-taking-flight-progress

Project: 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s – #7 by Craig L Haupt

Title-“Taking Flight”  Third sequenced post.

Posted is the “Taking Flight” painting in progress.

Applying the first coats, or under-layers, is akin to the worksheet in many ways. As the worksheet progresses with numerous alterations (some changes continuing even as the painting is in progress), the changes to colors in the painting take much the same path. In this painting, the ‘Birds’ are red with green wings and, as much as I thought these colors would work, they seem to remind me more of Holly leaves and berries than shapes representing birds.

To the right of these ‘Birds’, the ‘Sail’, suggesting a sailboat, worked during this phase of the painting but as second and third coats of final colors were applied and modifications to other shapes took place the ‘sail’ became a heavy blank white area and I needed to go back to the worksheet to add and work out additional details that would strengthen the ‘sail’ and compliment the other shapes in the painting.

The finished painting post next Monday will reflect those changes.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week 14

Denial

“The House That Jack Built”

Week 14-Intermission

The painting of “The House That Jack Built” has been started.

I have made the purchase of a camera to allow me the flexibility to record the progress of the painting. Still extend a ton of thanks to Laura and Mac for taking the “suggestions added” pictures at the four corner postings.

If I can’t figure out all the buttons/menu’s needed to navigate my way to taking first pictures of the painting in-progress I still might ask for their assistance again.

So, this painting, as I continue to prep the layout, will take several weeks to complete. The plan (as of now) is to Post another intermission art image tonight, then Post progress images of “The House That Jack Built”.

For this intermission, the above Color-pencil/Watercolor drawing is entitled “Denial”. This drawing was completed in October, 2006. One of my favorites.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, September 15; An intermission, (post a past art image).

Monday, September 22 and continued Mondays; Post progress images of “The House That Jack Built” painting.

The Ukazoo Journey-“Snapshots and Memorabilia”

Marble Hitting Forest Floor

The Ukazoo Journey-“Snapshots and Memorabilia”

Sixth week of Ukazoo Art Exhibit

“Marble Hitting the Forest Floor”

Concerning the Ukazoo Art Exhibit, Mac, who was rushed to the hospital moments before leaving his home to attend the Opening Exhibit is now home after four days in the hospital. Doing well.

To work out an evening to meet with Mac and his wife Laura at the Ukazoo Exhibit, I have scheduled an informal closing reception Saturday evening, April 12th. This “meet and greet” is for anyone yet to see the art exhibit, those who were unable to make the opening, and guests who would like to drop by and pick up purchased art. I will be there from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at which time I will start the packing up process. Again, it was a wonderful Opening, March 15th and thank all those that attended.

On a Ukazoo Journey “Snapshots and Memorabilia” note:

One final manila envelope lay at the bottom of the box of mail I had retrieved from the Post Office after my journey. I put off opening it till after the Opening Reception.

Picking the envelope up, I spotted the New York postmark and remembered my stop near Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Park where I posted Slide 29-”Reflection”. The contents, similar as the other manila envelopes I received by mail, was a letter and in this case a print, rather than a photograph.

The letter was from “Morning Dove Among the Clouds”, one of the owners of “Unity’s Soft Comfort to Heavenly Dream &Taste Bud Sensations” (Bed & Breakfast). Morning, I knew from my visit, was a exceptional sculpture artist with a great many of her pieces placed about the grounds of their inn. I was unaware Morning also, infrequently, worked with oils and had a few of her paintings adorning the walls at the Inn.

Morning wrote, that feeling rather proud of her hubby for helping her with the re-doweling of the spherical limbs of her outdoor sculpture at the Reflection Pool, she decided to paint a “this is what I feel” interpretation of her husband, “Marble Hitting the Forest Floor”, aka Butch. Morning made a few prints and sent one to me, which I have included in this post.

In closing, her letter mentioned that Butch says hi and wanted me to know that guests of the retreat were so glad he changed his healthy alteration of s’more’s back to the original recipe of chocolate bars, marshmallows, and graham crackers and that he will never, ever, tinker with the ingredients’ again.

Journey to Ukazoo-Slide Seven

How to Spin a Top

Journey to Ukazoo

Slide Seven: How to Spin a Top

It was evening when I pulled into Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Found a restaurant to get a bite to eat and at the next table over I met a couple, Jack and Kelly. After getting to know them, I was cordially invited to their son’s debut the next day of trying to spin a top for the first time, in front of family and friends, since reading a recently acquired instruction book.

To his family the act of top spinning was as important as learning to read and write, and for several generations they had won various trophies at Top Spinning competitions. Yet their son, Kirk, could not master top spinning-not even with the help of relatives, friends, How to Books, after school programs or even “In Your Sleep” instructional tapes.

His repeated failures to master the art of top spinning had effected him personally and I was told there was a period several years back in ‘01 to ‘03, after a very close friend had moved away, that his depression became so bad that even all the different types of tops he purchased were predominantly blue in color. Family and friends helped him through those rough years but outwardly you could still see the lingering effects of that period.

The instruction book he received was from a long lost cousin in Spain was based on some rather abstract ideas. The book took standard Top spinning instructions and illustrations and rearranged them in ways he had never seen before but to his mind they breathed an air of clarity where all other straight forward instructional techniques had failed.

I took this picture of Kirk, as a set up shot. He had just finished spinning his top for the first time but he wanted the picture to represent the reading of the book as the true reason he was finally able to spin the top successfully.

Afterwards, Kirk told me he felt like a weight had been lifted and he was walking on a bed of roses after being so down and blue for so long. He also decided that he was now intent on mastering Chapter 12, “Seven Steps to Spin a Top on a 3”x 3” Cube”. The cube is to him one of the more challenging tricks but after considering all the steps, if he took away “Two” the method became even clearer.

Great family, will miss them. After breakfast tomorrow its onward to Ukazoo.
