#5- ‘The Little House’-Oil on Canvas, 8” x 10” Craig L Haupt

As with the previous post of ‘Red Sphere’ this painting is less about narrative and more about color. In particular, the transition of color, starting with the light blue at the ‘house’ and spiraling its way inward to the ‘faces’.

The “Eleven” Series

#4-“Red Sphere”-Oil on Canvas, 8” x 10” Craig L Haupt

From a very simple ‘doodle’ in my sketchbook I choose to maintain that simplicity in the line work and rely more on color to strengthen the final image.

A touch more abstract then I am used to doing and also void of any narrative.

The “Eleven” Series

#3-“Bob & Bob”-Oil on Canvas, 8” x 10” Craig L Haupt

Of the eleven paintings in this series, there are two that are reworks of earlier Pen & Ink drawings. This is one.  On the original Bob & Bob drawing there was a design element on the figure to the right whose clarity as an eye, was not as strong as it could have been. This oil painting series afforded me a chance to alter that design ‘flaw’ with a different medium.

Even with the change I was able to keep the general flavor afforded the Pen & Ink/Watercolor/Color pencil drawing, yet have an oil painting that was independent of the original.

The Eleven Series

“Reaching”-Oil on Canvas, 8” x 10” Craig L Haupt

On day Two of my “break” from painting (March 29th), I happened to see a relativity simple Doodle in my Sketch book. I looked over and saw a small 8” x 10” canvas. Suddenly the ‘break’ was over and I started on this several-week whirlwind of eleven 8” x 10” paintings. They are simple in design, quick in execution, some with a looser painting style than others, and most, are void of any narrative other than what an applied title might miserly suggest. They became an enjoyable exercise that set the tone for a few paintings in the second part of the  upcoming 12 + 12 project.

This is the first of the eleven, Titled “Reaching”, and these will be posted each Monday in the order that they were painted.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s – “The Patio” Finished Painting

Aside from finalizing various shapes and backgrounds with additional coats of paint, glazing, and shading to create form, the ‘Butterflies’ have a small history.

Back in 1995 I did a small 5” x 7” watercolor drawing using these multicolored butterflies in a design. Over the past 20 years I have tried, on a few occasions, to convert these ‘Butterflies’ into a painting using the same layout and design. I never did succeed.

While laying out the worksheet for this painting there were quiet whispers from some faraway place in my head that suggested this was a painting that these Butterflies could find a home. While not the same layout I had first worked with all those years ago, I’m satisfied with their place in this painting.

 

This marks the completion of 12 of the intended 24 paintings, a halfway point. I will be taking a break from the posting process. An upcoming out-of-town weekend reunion, Taxes, paperwork, Doctor and vehicle checkups, etc., all seeking attention and converging at the same time. 12 + 12, 12 x 12’s- “The Patio” Progress Painting

Posted is “The Patio” progress painting.

There was a time, very early in the worksheet, when the ‘face’ part of the patio was being considered as ‘stone’. I ended up switching it to ‘brick’ and using the ‘stone’ as a lower section to the patio which represents the ‘neck’ and ‘body’.

The ‘Butterflies’, moved quite a bit in the worksheet, are still being moved around in this progress posting. Sometimes us artists can be a little picky about placement.

The table width has proved to be a concern (I thought is was too wide). Now that I can better see it in it’s painted format, I am leaning towards removing a board from each side before I add the chairs.

“12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“The Patio”, The Worksheet

Posted is ‘The Worksheet’ for “The Patio” painting.

Needless to say, from the excessive amount of eraser marks shown on this worksheet, that a great many alterations took place. Using a technique I employed in an earlier painting called “Room With a View” I am utilizing a combined overhead view and face-on view. Of the first layers of shapes (seen overhead), while depicting a picnic table, (to be brick) patio, daffodils, and fish pond, they are still used to suggest a face as mentioned in last weeks post.

In the next receding layers, the two figures shaded with green, are the transition shapes. Seen face-on, they are two figures, seen as an overhead view they’re depicting grass surrounding the patio. There is also a transition from the overhead view of the picnic table to the face-on view of the tree/bush branches that represents the hair.

The Butterflies, one used as a bowtie, can operate from both an overhead and face-on view.

Pardon me if this seems rather complicated, I really did just want a very simple painting.

Now it’s on to choosing colors for the painting.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“The Patio”, The Doodle

Posted is ‘The Doodle’, from Sketch Book One, 2005/2006. This selection is from the +12 portion of the project-Doodles selected by family/friends. This one was selected by Eric. Eric is one of my two sons, affectionately known as my favorite oldest son (and Jesse is my favorite youngest son). My request to guests of this project was to select three or more ‘doodles’ allowing me options in selecting a ‘doodle and or ‘doodles’ to work from. As true to Eric’s personally, he selected three caricature ’Doodles’ that seemed more suited to my ’Thumbnail Sketches’ project then to the current 12 + 12 project. He is the only one, of the 12 people selected for this project, that I returned the sketchbook and asked for a few additional selections. He selected this ‘doodle’. While not as far removed from his first selections, it was a choice that had greater potential to develop into a painting.

Pertaining to the ’doodle’ circled in ‘red’, the challenge was how to decipher what appeared to be a face in the forward grouping of shapes, with the two figures (noted by their eyes) protruding to each side in the next receding layer of shapes. Then of course there is another layer of shapes behind those.

Next weeks Worksheet posting will offer a solution.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s – “Duplex” Finished Painting

Posted is the 12” x 12” “Duplex” Finished painting.
When putting forth a finished painting for all to see, I am at a disadvantage from the viewers perspective. Since my time spent with each painting is either the painting aspect in and of itself or numerous hours of musing various facets of shapes and colors, I can’t see my paintings with fresh eyes.

This leads me to the ending paragraph written in last weeks post,  “The difficult part in this painting is how these ‘applied’ decisions create a sense of logic as various converging lines distort where forms (cities, skies, ground, etc.) are seen as behind a particular shape in one instance then moves to be projected in front of the same shape moments later”.

Not sure whether this bending of ‘logic’ will be seen by viewers as successful or not, but from my experimenting with ambiguous receding and overlapping angled planes that emanated from the ‘doodle’, I am, from my perch, satisfied with this attempt.

12 + 12, 12 x 12’s-“Duplex”, The Worksheet

Posted is the 12” x 12” pencil Worksheet to be used for the ‘Duplex” painting.
Referring back to last weeks first sequenced ‘Doodle’ post of this “Duplex” painting, I mentioned the omission of the ‘rocky column’ shape in the ‘semi-worksheet’. I felt this was an important feature in the ‘Doodle’ so I have retained it.

The five ‘spheres’ I also decided to retain but not in the original position shown in the ’Doodle’.

For certain art genre, particularly landscape paintings, attention is given to establishing a ’foreground’, middle-ground, and ’background’. In this painting, while I have those three planes/grounds shown as the triangle trees/rocky column in the foreground, the two cities as the middle-ground and the sun/sky as the background, it is the intersecting of various shapes that project an ambiguous overlapping of those three planes.
