“The Thumbnail Sketches”-Number Three

“The Thumbnail Sketches”

Number Three

This “Thumbnail Sketch” is one of two thumbnail drawings I did of the same subject.

The Thumbnail drawings are set up as six boxes/thumbnail templates on a 9 x 12 inch paper to accommodate the digital scanning process for prints. I had completed this Thumbnail drawing but had not completed the entire sheet, much less had them digitally scanned. A dilemma occurred when I wanted to give this drawing, as a gift, to a close friend but couldn’t, at the time, separate it from the uncompleted sheet of six thumbnails.

I decided to create a stand-alone duplicate Thumbnail drawing, albeit with slight shape and color variations, as the gift.

Both originals are now in private collections.

See “The Thumbnail Sketches” Number One for a synopsis of this “Series of drawings”

“The Thumbnail Sketches”-Number Two

“The Thumbnail Sketches”

Number Two

There have been a few “Thumbnail Sketch” subjects that have, over time, managed to find their way to a larger modified ‘finished’ drawing. This is one of those Thumbnail sketches.

The outlined box is 2 1/4” (56mm) square. The thumb outline measures 2” (51mm) from the bottom border to the tip of the thumb.

“The Thumbnail Sketches” Number One

Thumbnail 1

“The Thumbnail Sketches”

Number One

Way, way, back when, I had a small simple sketch (doodle) of a face that I liked. Every time I reviewed my earlier sketch’s, I saw this “face” and as much as I liked it, I couldn’t seem to develop it into a finished drawing.

Over time, I also noticed that I started to accumulate other small subject’s in the sketchbooks that never found a home as a finished drawing.

During my tenure as an art teacher, I created a ditto, called a “Thumbnail Sketch Sheet” (with a drawing of a thumb to one side of the title and a nail to the other side). Beneath were four outlined squares for my students to create four different ideas for the current art lesson. One of which would be used for their final composition. The other three were tucked away in their file folder, also never to find a home.

After years of an ‘on again/off again’ mission to find a home for these doodles, there came an evening, four years ago, when I remembered the Thumbnail sketch sheet and wa-la, an idea, I traced my thumb for a pattern and found a home for my “misfit” doodles.

The outlined box surrounding the thumb is 2 1/4” (56mm) square. The thumb outline is enlarged from my original thumb size to accommodate a small drawing, but it still only measures 2” (51mm) from the bottom border to the tip of the thumb.

While these postings of the “Thumbnail Sketches” will not be in any chronological order, this first post is that initial “face” sketch that started me on this road.

My apologies.

Thick Hair

“The House That Jack Built”

Week 12-Intermission

A “Thank You” to all those that submitted suggestions of items to be included in the “Fourth” and final corner” of “The House That Jack Built” project.

As I have listed in the schedule, I am posting a past Art image, as an “Intermission” while I am selecting items to be used and applying them to the Fourth Corner Pen & Ink drawing. “The House That Jack Built”-Week Ten

The House That Jack Built Third corner additions

“The House That Jack Built”

Week Ten-Third Corner with Suggestions

Herein is the Third corner of the Pen & Ink worksheet with suggestions from viewers to “The House That Jack Built” project. This is a camera shot rather than a digital scan so coloring is different from the previous “3rd corner” post.

Thanks to all that have participated so far.

As I mentioned in the first post (June 16) of this project, not all suggestions can be incorporated into the image. However some suggestions I do not include may still find their way into another corner of the house.

An example of this:

A Newspaper was suggested for the Third Corner and I have added this to the First Corner Porch area.

Had two suggestions for wall clocks, one a cat clock with the pendulum tail and one a cuckoo clock, so I used the cuckoo clock design but put a cat in place of the bird.

As I continue to lay out the painting, some shifting, additions, and alterations of suggestions can still take place up to the final strokes of the brush.

Next week I will post the Fourth Corner with areas to be considered and look forward to additional suggestions.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, August 18; Third Corner with suggested items.

Monday, August 25; Post the Fourth and final Corner for suggestions of that area

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.
