“The House That Jack Built”-Week 17

Jack 1

“The House That Jack Built”

Week 17-“Jack”

All the “buzz about town and 3/4’s of the country” (o.k., make that 5/8’s) has been about the items inserted into “The House That Jack Built” painting.

It is only fair that I take an opportunity to introduce “Jack”. This forgotten center section of the painting is the area that was the original “doodle” way back in my days of youth.

A friend I’ve known for many years, “Jack” is not just a designer/draftsman, but is also a carpenter, bricklayer, painter, and roofer. He can hang the gutter and downspout, install the plumbing and don the electricians hat when needed. Less not I forget, he has a canny sense for landscaping.

Reflecting on this wide range of “Jack’s” abilities, it prompts my thinking that there should be some type of saying affixed for someone that is proficient in a wide range of trades. I’ll ponder.

Back to the painting, this center motif, while a part of “The House That Jack Built”, is a separate painting of its own, and as this section of the painting also progress’s, I will interject a close up image of “Jack” from time to time.

This image appears a little on the dark side, still working with lighting (flash creates too much glare).

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, October 6; “Jack”.

Monday, October 13 and following Monday’s; Post continuing progress images of “The House That Jack Built” painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week 16

“The House That Jack Built”

Week 16-The Painting in Progress

The second photo on the progress of the  painting “The House That Jack Built” is posted above.

A fair amount of the items suggested by viewers of “The House That Jack Built” have been roughed in. There are several items still to be worked out and added.

As this painting progresses, artistic license prevails and items in the posted ’drawing’ stage may be reworked, i.e. the radio, over the door, has been altered from a rectangle to a more conical shape.

Another example is the cuckoo clock which will change to a more rectangle shape because a birdhouse will be hung from one of the boards in the same area and I don’t want the two to have a similar shape.

As mentioned in the last posting there might be a judgment call of inserting an intermission image on a future Monday evening post if I feel that the level of progress is not evident enough to show any major differences from the preceding week.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, September 29; Second progress photo of “The House That Jack Built”.

Monday, October 6 and following Monday’s; Post continuing progress images of “The House That Jack Built” painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week 15

Jack's House-1st

“The House That Jack Built”

Week 15-The Painting

The start of the  painting of “The House That Jack Built” is posted above.

As I mentioned in the “Week 14” posting, I have made the purchase of a camera to allow me the flexibility to record the progress of the painting. A ‘used’ camera with no book of instructions, but the instructions are available on-line, of which I downloaded (162 pages).

I have figured out some of the camera’s basic’s and the above photo of the beginning painted layout is my first attempts at hooking up the camera to the computer and downloading the image.

Still working with lighting and at one point I will be trying to manipulate the image in the Computer program to better the posted image.

The intent will be to post, each Monday, the progress of the painting till completed. There might be a judgment call of inserting an intermission image if I feel that the level of progress is not evident enough to show any major differences from the preceding week.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, September 22; Beginning the layout of “The House That Jack Built”.

Monday, September 29 and following Monday’s; Post continuing progress images of “The House That Jack Built” painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week 13

The House That Jack Built Fourth corner additions

“The House That Jack Built”

Week 13-Fourth Corner with Suggestions

And finally, the Fourth corner of the Pen & Ink worksheet with suggestions from viewers to “The House That Jack Built” project. Again, this is a camera shot rather than a digital scan so coloring is different from the initial “4th corner” post.

Thanks to all that have participated in this project.

As I continue to lay out the painting, some shifting, additions, and alterations of suggestions can still take place up to the final strokes of the brush.

Of note: One item suggested “Old Bay”, the issue of Copyrights has to be considered and as of now the can reads “New Bay”.

This painting, as I continue to prep the layout, will take several weeks to complete. The plan (as of now) is to Post another intermission art image next Monday, then work out a schedule of Posting progress images of the painting as I work to a finished painting.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, September 8; Fourth Corner with suggested items.

Monday, September 15; An intermission image.

Post Progress images of the painting till completed.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week 11

The House That Jack Built Fourth Corner

“The House That Jack Built”

Week 11-Fourth Corner-Pen & Ink Image

The above Pen & Ink worksheet is the Fourth and final of the four corners open for suggestions of items to be included in the final painting. Anyone new to the “The House That Jack Built” please scroll back to Monday’s June 16 (Week One) and June 23 (Week Two) Post for a description of this current project.

The guidelines for the “House That Jack Built” project:

If you please, just one suggestion per person for each corner, when posted.

At this Fourth corner, requesting suggestions of:

Items you might see in a Front or Back Yard.

or

Items found around the Kitchen.

I have to admit, this last corner is the one corner I have been most apprehensive about. There is limited shelf space (only one) and limited space in general being restricted by the gate. Please, I ask that you scroll back and notice how items were applied to the first three corners and then consider the type of item you suggest and how that might fit within the design.

There are, again, no interior floors so items that rest on a floor i.e. tables, refrigerator, etc will not work.

There are only so many things/items that can be selected for inclusion to create an overall balanced final composition, and suggestions will come from different sources (Facebook, WordPress Blog, Google Blog, LinkedIn, etc.), so take no offense if yours is not chosen.

There is no compensation for suggestions used, but I will keep tab of the names offering suggestions directly to my post or to the “Shared” posts. At the end of this project I will “pull a name out of the hat” and send that person a signed, first print of the final painting.

The posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today, Aug 25; Post the Fourth corner for suggestions of that area

Sept 1; Intermission. Post a past art image.

Sept 8; Post the Fourth corner with applied items from suggestions.

The final sequence will be a continued posting of past images till the posting of the completed painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week Ten

The House That Jack Built Third corner additions

“The House That Jack Built”

Week Ten-Third Corner with Suggestions

Herein is the Third corner of the Pen & Ink worksheet with suggestions from viewers to “The House That Jack Built” project. This is a camera shot rather than a digital scan so coloring is different from the previous “3rd corner” post.

Thanks to all that have participated so far.

As I mentioned in the first post (June 16) of this project, not all suggestions can be incorporated into the image. However some suggestions I do not include may still find their way into another corner of the house.

An example of this:

A Newspaper was suggested for the Third Corner and I have added this to the First Corner Porch area.

Had two suggestions for wall clocks, one a cat clock with the pendulum tail and one a cuckoo clock, so I used the cuckoo clock design but put a cat in place of the bird.

As I continue to lay out the painting, some shifting, additions, and alterations of suggestions can still take place up to the final strokes of the brush.

Next week I will post the Fourth Corner with areas to be considered and look forward to additional suggestions.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, August 18; Third Corner with suggested items.

Monday, August 25; Post the Fourth and final Corner for suggestions of that area

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week Eight

The House That Jack Built Third Corner

“The House That Jack Built”

Week Eight-Third Corner-Pen & Ink Image

The above Pen & Ink worksheet is the Third of the four corners open for suggestions of items to be included in the final painting. Anyone new to the “The House That Jack Built” please scroll back to Monday’s June 16 and June 23 Post for a description of this current project.

The guidelines for the “House That Jack Built” project:

If you please, just one suggestion per person for each corner, when posted.

At this Third corner, requesting suggestions of:

Things you see on the walls/ceiling and though-out a dining room.

or

Things you notice looking outside a window.

Here, I ask that you scroll back and notice how items were applied to the first two corners and then consider the type of item you suggest and how that might fit within the framework layout.

There are, again, no floors so items that rest on a floor i.e. tables, chairs, etc will not work.

There are only so many things/items that can be selected for inclusion to create an overall balanced final composition, and suggestions will come from different sources (Facebook, WordPress Blog, Google Blog, LinkedIn, etc.), so take no offense if yours is not chosen.

There is no compensation for suggestions used, but I will keep tab of the names offering suggestions directly to my post or to the “Shared” posts from wonderfully appreciated friends. At the end of this project I will “pull a name out of the hat” and send that person a signed, first print of the final painting.

The posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today, Aug 4; Post the third corner for suggestions of that area

Aug 11; Intermission. Post a past art image.

Aug 18; Post the third corner with applied items from suggestions.

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week Six

Four Watching

“The House That Jack Built”

Week Six-Intermission

A “Thank You” to all those that submitted suggestions of items to be included in the “Second corner” of “The House That Jack Built”.

As I have listed in the schedule, I am posting a past Art image, as an Intermission (I have chocolate chips cookies with a cold glass of milk sitting nearby) while I am selecting items to be used and applying them to the Second Corner Pen & Ink drawing.

The above Oil Painting is entitled “Four Watching”

As I started to learn how to work with Oil paints a few years ago, I contemplated over a few of my earlier Watercolor and Color Pencil drawings and how they would lend themselves as an Oil painting. This 2012 Oil painting is the reworking of a Color pencil drawing I completed in 2006.

Never did figure out what they were watching at the time, but in lieu of this project, they decided to take a moment and watch the ongoing construction of the house. Roy, the gentleman to the left, is contemplating his suggestion for the Third corner.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, July 21; An intermission, (post a past art image).

Monday, July 28; Repost the Second corner with added items.

Monday, August 4; Post the Third corner for suggestions of that area.

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week Five

The House That Jack Built Second corner

“The House That Jack Built”

Second Corner-Pen & Ink Image

The above Pen & Ink worksheet is the second of the four corners open for suggestions of items to be included in the final painting. Anyone new to the “The House That Jack Built” please scroll back to Monday’s June 16 Post for a description of this current project.

The guidelines for the “House That Jack Built” project:

If you please, just one suggestion per person for each corner, when posted.

At this Second corner, requesting a suggestion of:

Something you notice on Exterior walls of a house

or

Something you see on the walls/ceiling and though-out a Living room/Study.

At this juncture, I ask that you notice how items were applied to the first corner and consider the types of items you suggest that might lend themselves to the framework layout.

An example: There are no floors, so items that rest on a floor i.e. couch, chairs, etc will not work.

On the flip side,

At the first corner posting, the suggested “Komodo Dragon” was not common to the Porch/Foyer area but I used it in the design of the Kimono hanging on the coat rack. As an artist, I will consider your suggestion and how I might be able to include it into “The House That Jack Built”.

At the end of this project I will “pull a name out of the hat” and send that person a signed/numbered, first edition print of the final painting.

The posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today, July 14; Post the second corner for suggestions of that area

July 21; Intermission. Post a past art image.

July 28; Post the second corner with applied items from suggestions.

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week Four

The House That Jack Built First corner additions

“The House That Jack Built”

Week Four-First Corner with Suggestions

Herein is the first corner of the Pen & Ink worksheet with suggestions from viewers to “The House That Jack Built” project. This is a camera shot rather than a digital scan so coloring is different from the previous “1st corner” post.

Thanks to all that have participated so far.

As I mentioned in the first post (June 16) of this project, not all suggestions could be incorporated into the image. Some suggestions I did not include could still find their way into another corner of the house.

An example of this-Of animals/reptile suggestions (which, I admit, I am apprehensive because drawing/painting animals/reptiles are not my strong suit), I received a possum, a raven, a cat, and a Komodo dragon. Of those, the cat was not used, but is still retained on the list for consideration at one of the other corners.

I intend this project to result into a viable painting and as I add items, the artist part of me must also take into consideration-color, appearance of depth, balance, and overall composition. As I start to lay out the painting, the continuance of shifting, additions, and alterations of suggestions can still take place up to the final strokes of the brush, while I still work to maintain the integrity of the drawing worksheet and the project in general.

Next week I will post the second corner with areas to be considered and look forward to additional suggestions.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, July 7; First corner with suggested items.

Monday, July 14; Post the second corner for suggestions of that area

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.
