“The House That Jack Built”-Week Nine

Tulips

“The House That Jack Built”

Week Nine-Intermission

A “Thank You” to all those that submitted suggestions of items to be included in the “Third corner” of “The House That Jack Built”.

As I have listed in the schedule, I am posting a past Art image, as an Intermission (this intermission I decided to have a strawberry crowned custard tart topped with a smidgen, or maybe a dollop, o.k., a scoop of whipped cream and a cup of tea) while I am selecting items to be used and applying them to the Third Corner Pen & Ink drawing.

The above Watercolor Painting is entitled “Tulips”. At the beginning of my oil painting phase, I tried to do “Tulips” as an oil painting, (tried twice) just did not know enough about how to work with oils to make this a successful painting. I opted to complete it as a watercolor. Maybe one day I might try to work it as an Oil, but I am very satisfied with the watercolor version.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, August 11; An intermission, (post a past art image).

Monday, August 18; Repost the Third corner with added items.

Monday, August 25; Post the Third corner for suggestions of that area.

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week Five

The House That Jack Built Second corner

“The House That Jack Built”

Second Corner-Pen & Ink Image

The above Pen & Ink worksheet is the second of the four corners open for suggestions of items to be included in the final painting. Anyone new to the “The House That Jack Built” please scroll back to Monday’s June 16 Post for a description of this current project.

The guidelines for the “House That Jack Built” project:

If you please, just one suggestion per person for each corner, when posted.

At this Second corner, requesting a suggestion of:

Something you notice on Exterior walls of a house

or

Something you see on the walls/ceiling and though-out a Living room/Study.

At this juncture, I ask that you notice how items were applied to the first corner and consider the types of items you suggest that might lend themselves to the framework layout.

An example: There are no floors, so items that rest on a floor i.e. couch, chairs, etc will not work.

On the flip side,

At the first corner posting, the suggested “Komodo Dragon” was not common to the Porch/Foyer area but I used it in the design of the Kimono hanging on the coat rack. As an artist, I will consider your suggestion and how I might be able to include it into “The House That Jack Built”.

There are only so many things/items that can be selected for inclusion to create an overall balanced final composition, and suggestions will come from different sources (Facebook, WordPress Blog, Google Blog, LinkedIn, etc.), so take no offense if yours is not chosen.

There is no compensation for suggestions used, but I will keep tab of the names offering suggestions directly to my post or to the “Shared” posts. At the end of this project I will “pull a name out of the hat” and send that person a signed/numbered, first edition print of the final painting.

The posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today, July 14; Post the second corner for suggestions of that area

July 21; Intermission. Post a past art image.

July 28; Post the second corner with applied items from suggestions.

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week Four

The House That Jack Built First corner additions

“The House That Jack Built”

Week Four-First Corner with Suggestions

Herein is the first corner of the Pen & Ink worksheet with suggestions from viewers to “The House That Jack Built” project. This is a camera shot rather than a digital scan so coloring is different from the previous “1st corner” post.

Thanks to all that have participated so far.

As I mentioned in the first post (June 16) of this project, not all suggestions could be incorporated into the image. Some suggestions I did not include could still find their way into another corner of the house.

An example of this-Of animals/reptile suggestions (which, I admit, I am apprehensive because drawing/painting animals/reptiles are not my strong suit), I received a possum, a raven, a cat, and a Komodo dragon. Of those, the cat was not used, but is still retained on the list for consideration at one of the other corners.

I intend this project to result into a viable painting and as I add items, the artist part of me must also take into consideration-color, appearance of depth, balance, and overall composition. As I start to lay out the painting, the continuance of shifting, additions, and alterations of suggestions can still take place up to the final strokes of the brush, while I still work to maintain the integrity of the drawing worksheet and the project in general.

Next week I will post the second corner with areas to be considered and look forward to additional suggestions.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, July 7; First corner with suggested items.

Monday, July 14; Post the second corner for suggestions of that area

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week Three

At the Wall

“The House That Jack Built”

Week Three-Intermission

I begin this post with a “Thank You” to all those that submitted suggestions of items to be included in the “first corner” of the “House That Jack Built”.

As I have listed in the schedule, I am posting a past art image, as an intermission (I fixed a bowl of popcorn and a root beer with plenty of ice) while I am selecting items to be used and applying them to the Pen & Ink drawing.

The above pen & ink/watercolor art image is entitled “At the Wall”

Working from a small doodle in the sketch book, the initial figures always reminded me of the day the two young Dumpty brothers were expressing safety concerns of the locals and their habit of conducting everyday routines while standing on a wall. That evening, Benedict, the younger Dumpty, had noted in his journal, that their personal conclusion was-if one of them, heaven forbid, ever climbed up on a wall, they would certainly sit rather than stand. Apparently, years later, his older brother, found their conclusion to be slightly misguided.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, June 30; An intermission, (will post a past art image).

Monday, July 7; Repost the first corner with added items.

Monday, July 14; Post the second corner for suggestions of that area

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.

“The House That Jack Built” Week Two

The House That Jack Built First corner

“The House That Jack Built”

First Corner-Pen & Ink Image

I start this post with a deep breath. I don’t how this project is going to unfold, so there is a touch of apprehension.

The above Pen & Ink worksheet is the first of the four corners open for suggestions of items to be included in the final painting. Anyone new to the “The House That Jack Built” please scroll back to last Monday’s Post for a description of this current project.

The guidelines for the “House That Jack Built” project:

If you please, just one suggestion per person for each corner area, when posted.

There are only so many things/items that can be selected for inclusion to create an overall balanced final composition, and suggestions will come from different sources (Facebook, WordPress Blog, Google Blog, LinkedIn, etc.), so take no offense if yours is not chosen.

At this first corner, requesting suggestions of:

Things you see on/around a front door.

Things you see on or around a porch.

Things you see under a porch.

Things you would see in a foyer.

There is no compensation for suggestions used, but I will keep tab of the names offering suggestions directly to my post or to the “Shared” posts from wonderfully appreciated friends. At the end of this project I will “pull a name out of the hat” and send that person a signed, first print of the final painting.

The posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today, June 23; Post the first of four corners, door area being the first, and I will ask for suggestions of items to be added for that area.

Monday, June 30; An intermission, (will post a past art image).

Monday, July 7; Repost the first corner with added items.

Monday, July 14; Post the second corner for suggestions of that area

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.

“The House That Jack Built” Week One

The House That Jack Built

“The House That Jack Built”-Week One

Full 18” x 24” Pen & Ink Image

Well folks, here is what all the flashing lights, musical fanfare, confetti, fireworks, jugglers with flaming batons, clowns on unicycles, acrobatic alligators, a Zeppelin with scrolling text, mimes releasing balloons, and a dozen daring debutante’s being shot (one at a time, of course) from a canon screaming

“COMING, NEW PROJECT, KEEP TUNED FOR THIS EXCITING EVENT”

just before they hit the safety net, while a host of white doves and a thousand Butterflies (I counted) take to the sky to announce what I really wanted to say softy.

The Short and Sweet:

I would like suggestions from viewers, starting next Monday, of items to add to a painting.

The image you see posted is an 18” x 24” Pen & Ink worksheet, which is the reworking of a small (5 1/2” x 8”) pen & ink drawing finished way back in 1995 (when I was 116 years old). The small original (that I will post at the end of this project as a comparison) contained only a sparse six items within the framework of the boards/door/two windows and gate.

The above Pen & Ink worksheet (to be divided for this project, into four workable corner sections) and the accumulated, selected suggestions will be combined and transferred for completion as an 18” x 24” oil painting.

The posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Monday, June 23; Post the first of four corners, door area being the first, and I will ask for suggestions of items to be added for that area.

Monday, June 30; An intermission, (will post a past art image).

Monday, July 7; Repost the first corner with added items.

Monday, July 14; Post the second corner for suggestions of that area

Continue the sequence, and end the project with the posting of the completed painting.

Some Guidelines (which I will expand on next posting):

If you please, just one suggestion per person for each corner area, when posted.

There are only so many things/items that can be added, and suggestions will come from different sources (Facebook, WordPress Blog, LinkedIn, etc.), so take no offense if yours is not chosen.

There is no compensation for suggestions used, other than a heartfelt thank you for being part of this project, but I will keep tab of the names offering suggestions and will do a “pull a name out of the hat” to send that selected person a signed, first print of the final painting.

“The Ukazoo Art Exhibit”-Two of Nine

Eye to Eye

“The Ukazoo Art Exhibit”

Second of the Nine Oil Paintings displayed

“Eye to Eye”

October, 2012

16” x 20” Oil on Board

Besides the Nine Oil paintings on display at the Ukazoo Exhibit, there were 23 additional Pen & Ink/Watercolor/ Color pencil drawings called “Thumbnail Sketches”.  These finished drawings, only 2 1/4” x 2 1/4” (Five inches framed) are selected doodles taken from my sketchbooks, that although I liked the design, most have not been developed into larger, more involved, pieces of art work. One of these doodles, Eye to Eye, from October, 2006, I periodically debated if it would become a “Thumbnail Sketch” or a painting. The recent progression of learning to paint with oils cemented the decision to develop this design into a painting.

I give a nod of thanks to the “Studio Thursday Painters” group I belong to. Continually watching their wonderfully created art projects every Thursday evening and listening to their kind words of support as I tackled the learning process of various oil techniques was important in this early phase of the yet still unknown Ukazoo art exhibit.

There is still the reminder of the upcoming new project.

Don’t know if I should repeat:

“COMING, NEW PROJECT, KEEP TUNED FOR THIS EXCITING EVENT”

I could also add to the flashing lights, musical fanfare, and confetti of last weeks text:

SOME FIREWORKS as I shout,

“GET READY FOR THE NEXT BIG EVENT”

Again, this is difficult for me to make such a loud announcement, so I will again softly say, please keep following my journey, more neat art stuff is on the way.

The Ukazoo Journey-“Snapshots and Memorabilia” Week 8

Blue I

The Ukazoo Journey-“Snapshots and Memorabilia”

Eighth week of Ukazoo Art Exhibit

“Blue I”

The Ukazoo Art Exhibit will close Saturday evening, April 12, with an informal closing reception. Arranged to meet with several friends and guests who were unable to attend the opening reception, as well as those individuals who had purchased artwork and would like to pick it up at the close of the exhibit.

Anyone still interested in stopping by the Towson Ukazoo Bookstore Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. is welcome.

During the exhibit, I posted (including this one) for the eight weeks (Feb 17 to April 7), a second installment to the “Journey” entitled: “Snapshots and Memorabilia” which are part updates on the exhibit and part continuation of the “Journey to Ukazoo” slides and stories.

Starting April 14th, a Third Installment, for those not able to attend the exhibit, I will continue Ukazoo postings every Monday for the next nine weeks, each post highlighting one of the paintings featured in the Ukazoo Art Exhibit.

About Ukazoo, a few days ago I noticed on my bookshelf “Mya’s Poems for a Smile”, a book I purchased after attending her poetry recital in Chicago (Slide 25-The Cap).

While reading several poems from her book, I drifted in thought to the Ukazoo Journey. Reflecting on the past ten months of the journey and subsequent art exhibit, I found myself appreciative of the “Likes”, the “Shares”, the “Followers”, and viewership to Facebook and the Blog.

The kind words, encouragement and help, both during the journey and the art exhibit’s opening reception will not be forgotten.

Given these reflections, I found the last poem in Mya’s book appropriate for this posting:

“In this ink

There lies a tear.

Conceived not of sorrow,

Hurt, or fear.

With each form,

Each word I make.

My patient hand,

Seeks to relate.

To find those near,

And those afar

I thank your smile

Wherever you are.”

I took this picture of myself, (I guess I did a “selfie”) as I started typing Mya’s poem.

Recounting earlier attempts of taking a picture of myself during the journey, a decision has now firmly been made, I must get a new camera. I tried several more shots, held it at different angles, shook it, hit it on the table, even drew a lot of tiny lines on the lens, the camera still will not record my beard and mustache.

The Ukazoo Journey-“Snapshots and Memorabilia” Week 7

Blue II

The Ukazoo Journey-“Snapshots and Memorabilia”

Seventh week of Ukazoo Art Exhibit

“Blue II”

With the box of mail from the Post Office containing all the accumulated mail from the Journey to Ukazoo now empty, I turned my sights to today’s newly arrived postal offerings. Most were of the typical bill and ad variety but, lo and behold, nestled in the mix, was another manila envelope. This one was Postmarked-Vermont, and I couldn’t mentally connect that location with anyone I had met on my Journey.

The manila envelope offered the now familiar contents, a photo and accompanying letter.

I recognized the name of the sender immediately, Enzo, one of the six gentlemen I had met during my stop in North Tonawanda, New York. (Slide 28)

Enzo’s letter related, that the group deciding to visit the New York Finger Lakes region before heading home proved to be a highlight of three stops they made since leaving their unforgettable Niagara Falls episode.

At the lakes, they pooled together their money and purchased another rowboat. This time, all agreed to check the maps to avoid any rapids or waterfalls. Their on-the-water time, however, was limited by persistent cold weather, heavy snow blanketing the area over the week they had spent there, and the lakes, surrounding shallow streams, and slow moving rivers icing up.

The letter concluded:

“The day before our departure the weather changed dramatically as a bright sun and warm front greeted us that morning. Later that afternoon, we hiked down to a favorite scenic spot where several streams and brooks all converged with a fast flowing turbulent river. The visual treat of the merging waters was made even more captivating by the breaking-apart ice, riding swift currents between the snow covered banks.

Marco, still the quiet one, took some wonderful pictures and Theo, remembering our water connection, wanted to sent this particular picture to you.

Thanks again for your help with being our drop-off and pick-up driver for our boating adventure in North Tonawanda and for keeping us in sight to make the call for help during our ill-fated capsizing.

If you get a chance to drive through Vermont in any future trips be sure to stop in and say hi, you’re always welcome.

Enzo”
