“The House That Jack Built”

Week 26-Fourth Corner of Painting

As with the posting of the first 3 corners of the painting, while there is considerable progress in this corner, there are still areas/objects that will be revisited and finalized.

Latch for the gate, mulling over a design for the kite/adding the tail, a bluebird on the birdbath, reworking the basketball net, making the mice stand out more against the ‘grey’ background, maybe a mushroom or two and a few smaller flowers in the ’planters’, etc.

The next area of concentration is “Jack” (in the center) which is a painting unto itself.

With the holidays upon us, I am going to slow down with this next area and for the next 3 weeks post past art images as a “Holiday Intermission”.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today, Tuesday, December 16; “Fourth Corner Painting”.

Wire Mustache

“The House That Jack Built”

Week 25-”Rain” Delay intermission.

To be completely honest, I am not ready to post the “Fourth Corner” of “The House That Jack Built”. Still being worked on and just not progressed enough that I would be satisfied with putting it out there for you to see.

I am still working on it now as this is posted and feel that it will be ready to post tomorrow, Tuesday.

As I continue work with detail in the fourth corner area of the painting “The House That Jack Built” I will post a past Art image.

My apologies.

To reflect my mood at not posting the Fourth Corner, I will post a Pen & Ink/Color Pencil/Watercolor drawing entitled “Wire Mustache” completed July, 2007.

As with the posting of the first and second corner of the painting, while there is considerable progress in this corner, there are still areas/objects that will be revisited and finalized.

Hands and numbers still to be added to the cuckoo clock, red or white wine?, plus the “Alligator Tail” label, changing the stance of the music-box ballerina as well as adding hummingbirds and the finalizing the turtle’s shell etc.

The detail work has been slowing the process down but the painting is still moving along.

Curved Arms

“The House That Jack Built”

The new computer has had a few issues and they chose to occur on last weeks day of Posting. While not an unsurmountable problem, I was cut off from the internet last Monday and Tuesday till it was finally resolved.

As I work with detail in the third corner area of the painting “The House That Jack Built” I am posting a past Art image as an “Intermission”.

For this intermission, the above Color Pencil/Watercolor drawing is entitled “Curved Arms”. Still unframed and resting in the portfolio, this very simple line drawing was completed in July, 2006.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today, Monday, November 24; “Intermission”.

Monday, December 1 and following Monday’s; Post continuing progress images of “The House That Jack Built” painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week 21

Second Corner Painting

“The House That Jack Built”

Week 21-Second Corner of Painting

Ah, the woes of using a 10 year old computer with the non-supported Windows XP. Last Monday morning my trusty, yet very slooooow computer finally crashed and I found myself searching for a new computer and was not able to post “The House That Jack Built”

So here I am one week later.

As with the posting of the first corner of the painting, while there is considerable progress in this corner, there are still areas/objects that will be revisited and finalized.

It has been mentioned recently that a few objects in the first corner were similar to ones found in other paintings such as the paint cans (seen in the “Pirates in a Bathtub” painting), also the marbles (in “Walk in a Park”), the bricks (a common theme in several paintings) and the popcorn box (from “The Video Game).

This new wrinkle is having some effect with how I am approaching some other areas/objects in the painting. In this second corner, the wallpaper design from the worksheet drawing has been changed to the wallpaper design I used in the “She Loves Me Not” painting.

Not sure how the other areas will develop with related objects from previous paintings but I will keep my options open.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today, Monday, November 10; “Second Corner Painting”.

Monday, November 17 and following Monday’s; Post continuing progress images of “The House That Jack Built” painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week 19

“The House That Jack Built”

Week 19-First Corner of Painting

As I posted the four corners in sequence with suggestions from viewers, I will post the four corners again, showing the progress of the painting portion of “The House That Jack Built” project.

While there is considerable progress in this corner, it is still not finished.

With an oil painting, depending on how the paint is applied or medians added as I paint (i.e. Liquin, Linseed oil etc) drying times will vary. The newspaper on the porch and the Butterfly are two examples, both have been roughed in but need to wait 3 or 4 days for the paint to dry before I can add more detail.

As I also work at finalizing different areas, a few additional objects are finding their way into the painting. One, are marbles on the table with the ‘frog in the hat’. Added a hat and cane to the frog (courtesy of a conversation with Karen) and working on adding an origami bird on the bricks near the Kimono (courtesy of a conversation with Mac and Laura).

Some objects in the ‘first corner’ area still need adjustment. I am still not satisfied with the Kimono hanging on the coat rack, I have reworked it twice and still it needs some adjustment.

As I now move to concentrate on the second corner, I will continually drift back into the first corner to add, tweak, and finalize various objects.

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, October 20; “First Corner Painting”.

Monday, October 27 and following Monday’s; Post continuing progress images of “The House That Jack Built” painting.

“The House That Jack Built”-Week 17

Jack 1

“The House That Jack Built”

Week 17-“Jack”

All the “buzz about town and 3/4’s of the country” (o.k., make that 5/8’s) has been about the items inserted into “The House That Jack Built” painting.

It is only fair that I take an opportunity to introduce “Jack”. This forgotten center section of the painting is the area that was the original “doodle” way back in my days of youth.

A friend I’ve known for many years, “Jack” is not just a designer/draftsman, but is also a carpenter, bricklayer, painter, and roofer. He can hang the gutter and downspout, install the plumbing and don the electricians hat when needed. Less not I forget, he has a canny sense for landscaping.

Reflecting on this wide range of “Jack’s” abilities, it prompts my thinking that there should be some type of saying affixed for someone that is proficient in a wide range of trades. I’ll ponder.

Back to the painting, this center motif, while a part of “The House That Jack Built”, is a separate painting of its own, and as this section of the painting also progress’s, I will interject a close up image of “Jack” from time to time.

This image appears a little on the dark side, still working with lighting (flash creates too much glare).

The continuing posting schedule for the project is, as laid out:

Today,  Monday, October 6; “Jack”.

Monday, October 13 and following Monday’s; Post continuing progress images of “The House That Jack Built” painting.
