Mating Calls

“The Ukazoo Art Exhibit”

Sixth of the Nine Oil Paintings displayed

“Mating Calls”

November, 2013

22” x 22” Oil on Board

During July to November, with the Ukazoo stories to be completed every week, three watercolors to work on, the long process of cutting of double mats and fitting them into 5” x 5” frames for 23 drawings called “Thumbnail Sketches” (to also be displayed at the Ukazoo Exhibit), the progress of four started oil paintings (one still unfinished) moved at a snail’s pace. It wasn’t till late November that, finally, one of those oil paintings, “Mating Calls” was completed.

Another reminder of the upcoming new project to be posted Monday June 16th. Added to the flashing lights, musical fanfare, confetti, fireworks, jugglers with flaming batons, clowns on unicycles, and acrobatic alligators is a graceful flying metallic gray Zeppelin sporting scrolling brightly lit text declaring:

“COMING, NEW PROJECT, KEEP TUNED FOR THIS EXCITING EVENT”

As always, knowing my difficulty of making such a loud announcement, I say softy, please keep following my journey, more neat art stuff is on the way.

The Couple

“The Ukazoo Art Exhibit”

Fifth of the Nine Oil Paintings displayed

“The Couple”

June, 2013

16” x 20” Oil on Board

This painting is a departure from the norm. All my finished art over the past 143 years has been a chosen “doodle”, worked to a final outlined design on rough paper, then copied to tracing paper and transferred to the finish paper, canvas, board etc.

“The Couple” was my first experience with looking just at the “doodle” in the sketch book, a simple pen & ink outline of the two figures and bypassing all my usual steps. The changes to design, proportion, placement, color, and embellishments were made with paint directly on the board, as I worked and reworked the painting to a final conclusion.

I was extremely pleased with the result.

It was during this painting that I owe “thanks” to Judy. During a light conversation, at our painters group, reviewing my pro & cons of undecided locations for my next exhibit, it was Judy that suggested the Ukazoo Bookstore in Towson.

An ensuing email to Ukazoo, follow-up meeting securing a date ten months away, followed by three initial prints hung in Ukazoo bookstore, and three consecutive FaceBook, May 2013, postings of the displayed prints were the beginnings. By the second of the three posts I started to refer to them as my “mini Slide Show” which in turn triggered one of those “brightly lit light bulbs over the head” moments about a slide show and journey to the exhibit. A subsequent supportive discussion with Mac and Laura about creating a self-promotion project called “The Journey to Ukazoo” led to the June 3rd post of “Slide One”.

Another reminder of the upcoming new project to be posted Monday June 16th. Added to the flashing lights, musical fanfare, confetti, fireworks, jugglers with flaming batons, and clowns on unicycles of last weeks:

“COMING, NEW PROJECT, KEEP TUNED FOR THIS EXCITING EVENT”

Are seven amazing acrobatic alligators doing what acrobatic alligators do best.

She Loves Me Not

“She Loves Me Not”

March, 2013

16” x 20” Oil on Board

After two months of holiday season and the distractions of reading several books I refocused on painting again, knowing if I was to seriously consider a next art exhibit I wanted to be able to complete an estimated number of paintings.

In late January, 2013, I started a painting that I considered to be my cornerstone of the next exhibit and a month later this painting was shelved by technical problems that arose with the undercoating. Frustrated  and not sure about restarting it, I turned my attention to a new painting- “She Loves Me Not”.

As the “Still Life-Vase and Apples” was jokingly referred it as “my first serious” oil painting, “She Loves Me Not” was to be jokingly referred to as my “trek into tragedy”.

With April showers (an understatement) behind us and May flowers a-blooming, there is still the reminder of the upcoming new project to be posted Monday June 16th. Added to the flashing lights, musical fanfare, confetti, fireworks, and the jugglers with flaming batons of last weeks:

“COMING, NEW PROJECT, KEEP TUNED FOR THIS EXCITING EVENT”

Are clowns weaving back and forth on six foot high unicycles.

Third of the Nine Oil Paintings displayed

“Still Life-Vase and Apples”

November, 2012

16” x 20” Oil on Board

When beginning this painting, I have jokingly referred it as “my first serious” oil painting.

This is also the image I used for the postcard/email/social media invites, website Home page, and any promotion for the “Ukazoo Art Exhibit”.

Nod of thanks to close friends, Lee, Deborah and their daughter Katelyn, as well as their family members and close friends that attend their Thanksgiving dinners each year. Over the past several years, I have joined them for this Holiday dinner and part of the evening has become my annual “Show & Tell” of  recently completed art work. Along with a few other pieces, “Still Life” was the most recent finished painting. It is their viewpoints and encouragement of my art during these once a year displays that always add a boost of confidence to my motivation to continue exhibiting my artwork publicly. With “Still Life” as the third finished painting (since the Antreasian Gallery exhibit), a fourth in progress and another painting being prepped to start, it was during this evening that I knew that I would start to consider the next location for another exhibit.

Not to forget, there is still the reminder of the upcoming new project to be posted Monday June 16th. Added to the flashing lights, musical fanfare, confetti and the fireworks of last weeks:

“COMING, NEW PROJECT, KEEP TUNED FOR THIS EXCITING EVENT”

Are jugglers with flaming batons.

And again, still it is difficult for me to make such a loud announcement, so softly I say, please keep following my journey, more neat art stuff is on the way.

“The Ukazoo Art Exhibit”-Two of Nine

Eye to Eye

“The Ukazoo Art Exhibit”

Second of the Nine Oil Paintings displayed

“Eye to Eye”

October, 2012

16” x 20” Oil on Board

Besides the Nine Oil paintings on display at the Ukazoo Exhibit, there were 23 additional Pen & Ink/Watercolor/ Color pencil drawings called “Thumbnail Sketches”.  These finished drawings, only 2 1/4” x 2 1/4” (Five inches framed) are selected doodles taken from my sketchbooks, that although I liked the design, most have not been developed into larger, more involved, pieces of art work. One of these doodles, Eye to Eye, from October, 2006, I periodically debated if it would become a “Thumbnail Sketch” or a painting. The recent progression of learning to paint with oils cemented the decision to develop this design into a painting.

I give a nod of thanks to the “Studio Thursday Painters” group I belong to. Continually watching their wonderfully created art projects every Thursday evening and listening to their kind words of support as I tackled the learning process of various oil techniques was important in this early phase of the yet still unknown Ukazoo art exhibit.

There is still the reminder of the upcoming new project.

Don’t know if I should repeat:

“COMING, NEW PROJECT, KEEP TUNED FOR THIS EXCITING EVENT”

I could also add to the flashing lights, musical fanfare, and confetti of last weeks text:

SOME FIREWORKS as I shout,

“GET READY FOR THE NEXT BIG EVENT”

Again, this is difficult for me to make such a loud announcement, so I will again softly say, please keep following my journey, more neat art stuff is on the way.

Ice Scream

“The Ukazoo Art Exhibit”

First of the Nine Oil Paintings displayed

“Ice Scream”

Oil on Board, September, 2012

16” x 20”

The first phrase of the “Journey to Ukazoo” and the Art Exhibit have concluded.

There are many thanks to be given to friends that have helped along the way. I hope to mention as many as I can over the next nine weeks and the various ways they effected this wonderful journey.

With the posting of this painting, the first of the nine paintings I completed, the earliest participant in beginning to prepare for the next (yet unknown) art exhibit I mention a thank you to, is Karen. As my Thursday morning art teacher she helped push me (had a bruise on my shoulder for two weeks) to use the intense background colors in this painting.

It is only within the past three years I made the decision to learn how to work with Oils. During the past two years, Karen, is the second of two fine artists who have worked to teach me various oil painting techniques that I can apply to my subject matter and style of imagery.

“Ice Scream” is my lighthearted ode to Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” (The Scream of Nature).

On tap after the Art Exhibit Postings (June 9th) is a new project of which I have been given the advice that I should make this announcement in a grand matter.

Such as:

“COMING, NEW PROJECT, KEEP TUNED FOR THIS EXCITING EVENT”

I could also add:

FLASHING LIGHTS– FLASHING LIGHTS– FLASHING LIGHTS

SOME MUSICAL FANFARE

“GET READY FOR THE NEXT BIG EVENT”

SHOOTING CONFETTI  FROM A CANON

MORE FLASHING LIGHTS

But I can’t seem to bring myself to do that Big Sell type of self-promotion, so softly I say, please keep following my journey, more neat art stuff is on the way.

The Ukazoo Journey-“Snapshots and Memorabilia”

Marble Hitting Forest Floor

The Ukazoo Journey-“Snapshots and Memorabilia”

Sixth week of Ukazoo Art Exhibit

“Marble Hitting the Forest Floor”

Concerning the Ukazoo Art Exhibit, Mac, who was rushed to the hospital moments before leaving his home to attend the Opening Exhibit is now home after four days in the hospital. Doing well.

To work out an evening to meet with Mac and his wife Laura at the Ukazoo Exhibit, I have scheduled an informal closing reception Saturday evening, April 12th. This “meet and greet” is for anyone yet to see the art exhibit, those who were unable to make the opening, and guests who would like to drop by and pick up purchased art. I will be there from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at which time I will start the packing up process. Again, it was a wonderful Opening, March 15th and thank all those that attended.

On a Ukazoo Journey “Snapshots and Memorabilia” note:

One final manila envelope lay at the bottom of the box of mail I had retrieved from the Post Office after my journey. I put off opening it till after the Opening Reception.

Picking the envelope up, I spotted the New York postmark and remembered my stop near Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Park where I posted Slide 29-”Reflection”. The contents, similar as the other manila envelopes I received by mail, was a letter and in this case a print, rather than a photograph.

The letter was from “Morning Dove Among the Clouds”, one of the owners of “Unity’s Soft Comfort to Heavenly Dream &Taste Bud Sensations” (Bed & Breakfast). Morning, I knew from my visit, was a exceptional sculpture artist with a great many of her pieces placed about the grounds of their inn. I was unaware Morning also, infrequently, worked with oils and had a few of her paintings adorning the walls at the Inn.

Morning wrote, that feeling rather proud of her hubby for helping her with the re-doweling of the spherical limbs of her outdoor sculpture at the Reflection Pool, she decided to paint a “this is what I feel” interpretation of her husband, “Marble Hitting the Forest Floor”, aka Butch. Morning made a few prints and sent one to me, which I have included in this post.

In closing, her letter mentioned that Butch says hi and wanted me to know that guests of the retreat were so glad he changed his healthy alteration of s’more’s back to the original recipe of chocolate bars, marshmallows, and graham crackers and that he will never, ever, tinker with the ingredients’ again.

Regarding the Ukazoo Art Exhibit Opening Reception held Saturday, March 15, 2014.

A few days ago I wrote an open letter to members of a Thursday evening painting group I am associated with.

Thursday, March 13, two days before the Ukazoo Art Exhibit Opening Reception they offered to bring a dish to share and/or a bottle of wine to the Reception. I didn’t refuse.

The letter I sent to painter’s group, expressed that I was overwhelmed by their offer of support and help with the Art Exhibit and how wonderful it was to know such a exceptional group of painters/friends.

The same sentiments can be said of all the family, friends, and guests that attended the Opening Reception, Saturday, March 15th.

I have a small place and with the setup I have to work on art, the space is not conducive to entertaining company. Under these circumstances, the art exhibits I host, have become my vehicle for not just sharing the art I create but more importantly “my party” to connect with family and with friends I have met over the years. It also allows me to meet additional guests new to my artwork.

With hosting this event, I hope I didn’t make too many social grafts as I met/didn’t meet, introduced/failed to introduce, or cut short a conversation here and there to meet a new arrival, etc.

I enjoyed the evening immensely and regret not being able to spend more time with each of you.

Thank all of you for attending.

Last, but not the least, one unfortunate event of the evening was the absence of two close friends, Mac and his wife, Laura. Mac had helped me that morning hanging the artwork for Saturday evenings exhibit and later that evening, just five minutes before leaving their home to attend the opening, Mac was rushed to the hospital due to having a mild stroke. I was made aware of the situation during the reception, and the duration of the evening, while enjoyable on one level, was shrouded by a cloud of concern with his condition and knowing I would be informed if things would have taken a serious turn. I drove directly to the hospital after the exhibit to visit Mac and assured he was doing much better with additional testing still to be done.

Thanks to Todd and Lois for giving me updated information on Mac’s condition and location.

On a Ukazoo Journey “Snapshots and Memorabilia” note, I found another photo I took while visiting an Art Gallery in Bowling Green, Ohio.

I had met a couple just as I arrived and Harlan, the husband, not an art aficionado, let his wife Harriet to do most of the wandering around.

I saw Harlan a little later when I wandered out to the Galleries sculpture garden. With several of the garden sculptures being interactive pieces and Harlan finding one of the these sculptures having a small incorporated shelf that looked inviting, he sat down to wait on Harriet. Settling in, Harlan showed little movement as he blankly gazed ahead while engaged with his own internal meandering thoughts.

Becoming such an unmoving part of the sculpture, several people had inquired with the gallery owner that if the price of the sculpture included “Harlan”, they were interested in purchasing it.

I took this picture just before Harriet, ready to leave with a newly acquired small painting, had quite a laugh when she found Harlan. Still sitting in much the same position as she last saw him an hour ago, Harriet jokingly informed him that the sculpture was interactive not in-active.

Journey to Ukazoo-Slide 32

Broken Penny Farthing

Journey to Ukazoo

Slide 32-”Broken Penny Farthing”

Continuing with my second stop of four in Maine, I checked into the Hearthside Bed & Breakfast in the town of Bar Harbor on Mt. Desert Island. Besides working on a couple of small drawings, I plan on doing some biking at the adjoining Acadia National Park.

Within the park’s borders lies “The Carriage Roads”, a network of 51 miles of crushed stone roads divided into 12 interconnecting “Loops”. Catering to walking, biking, horseback riding, and horse drawn carriages, no motor vehicles are allowed on the roads.

As I was unloading my bike, two separate groups of bicyclists arrived and parked on each side of the street. One group, also checking into Hearthside Inn, began unloading their bikes, 11 restored late 19th century Penny Farthings. All the bikes sported 50 to 56 inch diameter front wheels and modified with brakes on the smaller rear wheels. Eugene, the unofficial leader, related, with most of the members, by profession, connected to law enforcement, we call ourselves “The Copper Pennies”.

The second small caravan of similar vehicles arrived at the B&B Inn across the street with numerous “regular” gear-driven Ten-speed bikes perched on racks. Appropriately, by decals on  bumpers and windshields, they proclaimed themselves “The Gearheads”

I milled the perimeter as both groups converged, checking each others bikes. As compliments mixed with technical talk, biking stories, and touring the Carriage Roads, the friendly banter initiated a lighthearted wager in the form of a race.

Taking into account the pro’s and con’s of both styles of bikes, a handicap was agreed to. Looking over the map, the Gearheads, led by James, agreed to bike Loop 12 (11.1 Miles) and the connecting Loop 4 (8.6 Miles) would be biked by Eugene and the Copper Pennies. The start/finish would be the Deer Brook stone bridge, located on the connecting section, and in case the finish was close they would enlist a neutral party to declare the winner.

With that, both groups turned in my direction. I agreed.

The following day at the Carriage Roads, on a brisk sun-filled morning, both groups gathered, with the “Gears” facing North and the “Coppers” facing South at the North end of the Bridge. With my shout, they began.

An hour an a half later, it was the whoops and laughter of Eugene and James, out in front, approaching from opposite directions, that brought me to attention and I readied the camera to record the finish. Realizing it would indeed be a close finish, they shouted encouragement and urgings to those close behind, and picking up speed, bore down for the finish at the South end of the bridge.

Now, maybe, if the rabbit that scampered up onto the road’s edge across from me, had waited 30 seconds before deciding this side of the road was the “greener pasture”, harmony and a good natured resolution among bikers may have ruled the day.

My warning was, for the most part, useless, as were their brakes at the suddenness of the potential circumstances. Both Eugene and James, seeing the rabbit dart directly in front of their merging paths, veered, mistakenly into each other, with two other bikers close behind.

At five feet above the ground, an abrupt stop, launching the rider forward head first, called a “Header” is the most dangerous aspect of riding a Penny Farthing.

Taking this picture at impact, Eugene, instinctively, took his feet off the pedals, leaned back, and brought his legs and feet up over the handle bars, so he was pitched off the bike feet-first rather than head-first. An old written solution he had never had the occasion to use until today.

When the dust cleared, without a doubt, the most amazing thing was the lack of serious injury and of damage to the bikes other than Eugene’s Penny Farthing’s front wheel separating from the frame.

A safe unaware rabbit, several band-aids, needed replacement parts back at the Parking lot, an assurance that everyone received a photo of the crash, and an agreed upon “Tie” put everyone back in fine spirits.

Journey to Ukazoo-Slide 28

But the Map Says....

Journey to Ukazoo

Slide 28: “But the Map Says….”

From Ohio, I stopped at a Bed &Breakfast in North Tonawanda, NY, 13 miles south of Niagara Falls.

By weeks end, on Friday, I was sitting on the front porch of the inn when a passenger van, with secured rowboat atop, approached the B&B. Instead of stopping it moseyed pass and parked several houses down. With six gentlemen exiting the van, I could just make out their animated discussion involving which house was the B&B. The driver, quiet, seemed to wait patiently for a resolution, while four of remaining five insisted they were at the B&B. The last of the six, holding the Inn’s emailed directions, was pointing back towards the Inn. The four wouldn’t listen and made their way to the front door and were consequently directed, by the owner, to the same place their colleague had pointed.

As they checked into the B&B, I learned that they were six buddies on a trip without the wives, intent on a rip-roaring guys-only good time. I sensed an interesting weekend ahead.

For dinner, they decided on one of the Inn’s recommended restaurants and the same four were adamant that clearly by the restaurant’s name, Antero’s, Italian food was offered. The driver, Marco, offered no opinion and the sixth, Enzo, noticing no Italian dishes listed on the Inn’s sample menu, mentioned  “but the Menu reads….” to no avail. They left. Thirty minutes later they returned to the inn, rechecked the Inn’s sample menu’s and found a restaurant that served Italian. Antero’s was Finnish.

The next morning, sitting on the porch, the topic of heading to Grand Island developed into similar discussions I had witnessed yesterday. The same four, spearheaded by Theo, insisted the island was East, Marco, again silent of any input, and Enzo, with a tourist brochure in hand tried to persuade his friends to head West. Overruled, they piled into the van and headed East. Within 15 minutes, I noticed the van retracing its route, now heading West.

That evening was the planned boat ride under the stars. They asked if I would be the designated driver, taking them to launch the boat and drive down river to retrieve them.

Dropping them off, the same argument transpired with Enzo, map in hand, trying to tell them they were too far up river. They claimed, again with no feedback from Marco, they were down river from the falls and eased the boat into the water.

Not twenty minutes into driving, I noticed a series of smaller waterfalls and rapids to my left and further downstream, the American side of Niagara Falls. I pulled over and could just see their boat, making it’s way to the edge of the first line of waterfalls. Too far away to verbally warn them, I quickly called 911, then I got out my camera and attached my long lens to keep them in sight. As I took this picture, I could make out the same scenario taking place. Theo and the other three insisting by their calculations that the emanating sounds of the ‘falls’ were behind them and therefore maintain course. Marco rowing, nervously mute, going with the flow. In the back of the boat was Enzo, map spread out, dimly illuminated by a flashlight, still asserting “But the Map says…”.

Sirens sounded of approaching rescue vehicles and the whirl of rotors overhead signaled a helicopter was zeroing in. The first set of falls, a preamble of the rapids and looming larger falls, offered a seven foot downward plunge. They went over. Capsized, Enzo and the others managed to swim to a protruding isolated rock while a now empty boat floated to an unfortunate end. After their rescue, still wet, embarrassed, and minus a boat, I drove them back to the inn.

The next morning while they were preparing to leave, Theo and the others mentioned they wanted to at least stop at the Finger Lakes region before heading home and all, in unison, turned  towards Enzo and asked with humbled voices “Which way should we go?”.
